EXTENSION-LADDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, GRANVILLE Gr. CRABB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an extension step ladder, the object of the invention being a ladder in which the extension will form the support for a step ladder when the device is used as an ordinary step ladder.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the device in position for use as a step ladder. Fig. 2 is a front view showing a portion of the ladder with the extension in position for use. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through the upper portion of the device with the parts in position for use as a step ladder. F ig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

In constructingl my ladder, l employ a step section l and a supporting` extension section 2 which ladder is provided with the usual rounds 3. Upon the step ladder portion l and adjacent its upper end are placed plates 4 provided with inwardly extending pins 5, and upon the upper ends of the side members of the ladder section 2 are secured bearings G in which said pins rest, the section 2 beingl thus pivotally connected to the step section l. A locking bail 7 is pivotally connected to the step section and is bent to form a hook member for engagement with the uppermost round 3. Angled catches 8 are pivotally connected to the outer sides of the side members of the step section l adjacent their upper ends, said plates being adapted to be swung over the upper ends of said side members for a purpose which will appear hereafter. A bucket supporting shelf 9 is provided with angled strips l0, and said shelf is placed in position by engaging said strips l() with the catches 8, the free end portions of said strips slipping between the angled end portions of the catches and the rear faces of the side members of the step section, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2.

Then the device is used as a step ladder section 2 forms a supporting leg for the Specification of Letters Patent.

same and is locked in position by engagement of the bail 7 with one of the rounds 3. YWhen the section 2 is to be employed as an extension of the ladder' the shelf 9 is removed, and the catches 8 are lifted up so that their angled end portions will rest above the upper ends of the side members of the step section, and the extension is then swung upwardly into alinement with the step section, the side members of the section 2 resting within the side members of section l, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and angled plates ll carried by the side members of the extension section 2 bear against the rear faces of the side members of the step section, and prevent additional swinging movement in a forward direction of the extension section. The catches 8 are then turned down into their normal positions and t over the projecting angled portions of the plates l1, and lock the extension against movement toward its normal supporting position. The extension is thus locked in alinement with the step section and the ladder is used in the usual way by placing in position against the wall of a building or against any other suitable support for it.

Having` thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A device of the kind described comprising' a step section, and an extension section, the side members of the extension section being pivotally connected to the inner sides of the side members of the step section and at points below the upper ends of said side members, angled catches pivotally carried by the upper end portions of the side members of the front section, and angled plates carried by the side members of the extension section, said plates engaging the side members of the step section when the extension sect-ion is lifted into position, and the said catches turning over said angled plates and locking said extension in elevated position.

2. A device of the kind described comprising a step section, a supporting section pivotally connected thereto, angled, pivoted catches carried by the outer faces of the side members of the step section, said catches turning up over the upper ends of said side members, a shelf, metal strips carried by the shelf and having free end portions litting between said catches and the step section, and angled plates carried by the supporting section, said plates engaging the step section When the supporting section is lifted into alinement with it, the catches engaging said angled plates.

3. A device of the kind described comprising a step section, a supporting extension section, said extension section being provided with rounds, a bail 'carried by the step section for engagement with a round of the Vextension section7 angled stop plates carried by the extension section and limiting movement of said section when swung upwardly into alinement with the step section, and angled catches carried by the step section, said Catches fitting over said stops preventing reverse movement of the extension section after it has been swung upwardly into alinement with tlie step section.
