FENCE-POST.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB F. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phila delphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to an improvement in fence posts, the object being to construct a post that is removable for any purpose whatever, without destroying the surface in which the bottom part of the post is buried to receive its support.

The invention consists in the use of a stand which is buried below the surface and constructed to receive and support a post formed in two parts or sections for clamping and holding the abutting ends of the boards of the fence.

I have illustrated my invention by drawings herewith, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a panel of fence, showing two of the posts in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one of the posts and showing the position of the abutting ends of the boards. Fig. 3 is a top view of the panel and the two posts. Fig. 4; is a transverse vertical section of one of the posts. Fig. 5 is an inner face view of one of the parts or sections forming a post. Fig. 6 is a side view thereof. Fig. 7 is a section at to as, Fig. 1.

The upper portion of the tapering ends of the posts is somewhat rounded, to fit a correspondingly shaped socket hole 01", in the crown of the stand.

Resting upon the bridge or 'oross-girt d, of the stand d, is a tapering sleeve or circular cover 6, which fits snugly and protects and supports both of the semi-circular tapering portions of each duplicate section of the post.

In the construction of a fence or inclosure with my improved post the stands or supports for the posts are first placed in the ground in proper position and allowed to project slightly above the surface of the pavement or fioor line, the earth filling all the space not occupied by the stand and sleeve. The tapering semi-circular sections of the post are then introduced into the stands or supports up to the shoulders of each of the parts. The de pressed inner faces b of each duplicate section of the post will be to a depth of just onehalf of the thickness of the board a, used in the construction.

As the boards rest one upon the other screws or nails may be dispensed with excepting at the top board, but a cap piece running the entire length of the fence, or specially shaped caps or bolts may be used for fastening the two parts of the post firmly together at the top.

Where concrete, cement or other kind of pavement is to be used this form of construction of post is all valuable, inasmuch that should it be desirable to remove the fence for any purpose whatever it is simply necessary after removing the boards forming the panel, to lift the two parts of the post out of the stand without in any manner interfering with or breaking the surface of the pavement.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a fence post formed of two duplicately constructed sections or parts, each part or section having a depressed inner face, and similar semicircular tapering foot- .eXtensions; a stand or support for the said position, andra sl'eeve forming a part 'of said 16 stand, asset forth.
