ing the desired lettering are connected together and suitably anchored to prevent removal; and the objects of my invention are to produce a cement sign that shall below in cost, durable, easily connected, strongly anchored, and shall be an ornament, other objects and advantages being apparent from the following description. Fig. 2 is a section view of the same, showing the construction of said'cement sign.
In the construction of my said signs I mold from cement or other plastic material a base, as 1, being of any desired shape and preferably made with sloping edges at 2 and an opening in the middle of the upper surface, as 3, having its sides sloping inwardly and being in the shape of a truncated pyramid and adapted to receive the lower extremity of the shaft 10, hereinafter described. Extending from the bottom of said opening entirely through the base is an opening designed to receive the tube 9, hereinafter described, and permit it to extend through said block and project out beneath the same to permit the nut 12 to be screwed thereon against the under surface of the base. For the purpose of anchoring the said block I have molded into the sides of said base the eyebolt-s 4, having the nuts 5 embedded in said cement or other plastic material to prevent the bolts from being pulled out by the strain and at the outer ends eyes to receive the rings 3. These rings are connected by suitable wires or cables with suitable anchors, as 6, placed at any desired depth in the earth, which hold said signs securely against displacement accidentally or for mischief. The shaft or upright portion 10 I have also molded of cement or other suitable plastic material with a hollow metal center 9, having pins 11 therein to prevent detachment from said shaft and said hollow tube 9 extending a sufficient distance beneath said shaft to extend entirely through the base, with a thread at its lowermost extremity to receive the nut 12. At the top of said shaft I have molded a circular ornament or other suitable ornament to make the said sign ornamental, and the lower portion thereof I have made rectangular in cross-sectionfor right-angled street-crossings, and it may be made with three or-more sides for streetcorners having three or more streets diverging, and on each of the saidsides, preferably in raised letters, I have indicated the names of the streets crossing at such corners, with the points of the compass and such other information as may be desirable and arrows pointing in the directions desired to direct the public properly. At the lower end of said upright shaft 10 I have tapered it to correspond to the taper of the opening in the base. By this construction the said base and shaft may be made separately and shipped separately to the point where it is to be erected. The parts may then be placed in position with the shaft resting in the opening in the base, and by tighteningthe nut 12 upon said hollow tube the said shaft and upright may be firmly drawn together. By then properly anchoring the said sign it isfirmly placed'in position safe against accidental or mischievous removal, and yet at the same time it may be taken apart by removal of the said nut 12 to repair the said sign or to insert a new shaft or to change or alter the signs thereon. It will be apparent that the said sign may be placed entirely on top of the ground or partly below ground, if desired, and that it may be made in the identical shape shown in the drawings, or the shape may be altered for purpose of design, if wished, without departing form the spirit of my said invention. I prefor to construct the said base with thebeveled opening therein and the base with a bevel taper thereon to correspond, because by this means I am able to secure a more perfect fit and one less likely to become loose or separated. If desired, cement may be placed around the joint between the said shaft and the said base to prevent moisture entering between the two and injury to the sign by freezing or other deteriorating effects. I also prefer to construct the said shaft with the hollow tube inside thereof, because this form of construction makes the said shaft more durable and less likely to be broken olf or injured by any strain that may be applied thereto, as the hollow tube makes the said shaft more yielding without danger of cracking it. By making the said tube hollow it reduces the weight of said shaft and also reduces the amount of material required to construct it, thus reducing the cost and making it easier to handle without breaking. I also prefer to anchor said sign as shown, as the sign may be made much lighter in weight, making a considerable saving in both expense of .material and transportation if held down by means other than its Weight.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
