LIP-POST.
Application m Octobr 7, 1921. serial No. 506,183.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, JAMES S. CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Lamp-Posts, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for anchoring lamp posts, or the like, and the prime feature of the invention is the provision of metallic clips, or anchoring means of a relatively fragile construction, for holding the post in erect position under all normal conditions, but which-will readilybreak,
as when a severe blow is directed, against the post thereby permitting the post to fall over without being broken g A further feature of the invention 1s the provision of means for interlockingthe ch with the post supporting foundatlon an parts of the post construction.
And ,a further feature of the invention is in so constructing the post andanchoring means that the post may be readily reset and resecured to its base should the retain ing clipsbecome bro-ken.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanyingspecification.
In the accompanying drawings,
' Figure 1 is an elevation of a post attached Figure 2. is an enlarged sectionalview as seen on line 22, Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 33, Figure 2. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a post, in this instance a lamp post, such as is used for streetlighting purposes which 40 is preferably constructed of relatively strong substantially nonsbreakable metal; 2 indicates a foundation block or support for the post, and 3 indicates the base portion'of thepost, said base and ost being formed hollow, as is usual, an the base portion being of greater diameter than the ody of the post. lit frequently nature are struck by vehicles while traveling as "alon the street, and in the event the posts are rmly connected with the foundation block, are broken from the blow and destroyed, and it 'isthe prime object of this occurs that posts of this invention to overcome this objectionable feature so that the post although receiving may be constructed invarious shapes and contours, but as shown in the drawin s comrise ahorizontal portion 5, and a ependmg end 6, the horizontal portion 5 passing over a flange? formed on the interior of the base portion 3 of the post, while the depending end 6 rests on the foundation block 2. f The clips are clamped onto the flange by extendin a bolt 8 through the horizontal portion 5 etween the depending end 6 and the flange 7, the lower end of the bolt being anchored in the foundation block. By forming a hole through the clip 4 for the reception of the bolt 8 the clip becomes more or less weakened at this point and by threading a nut 9 onto the bolt and directing sufficlent pressure on the horizontal portion of the clip at its weakest point any severe lateral strain against the post will cause the 'present instance a removable section 10 is provided in the wall of the base 3, consequently the post can be -readily, set u in the first instance,-or may be reset shoul the 'clips become broken and the post knocked over;
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: A
1. The combination with a hollow post havingan inwardly directed flange, and a supporting base for the post, of a plurality of clips for clamping the postto the base each clip comprising a horizontal portion adjusted to extend over and engage said,
flange and having a portion for engagement with said base, and means fixed to said base adapted'to clamp'the clips on the flange.
2. The combination with a hollow post having an inwardly extending flange, and a sup orting base for said post, of a plurality of c ips for maintaining the post in upright position cach clip comprising a horizontal portionadapted to extend over and engage said flange and adepending portion at one vend thereof for engagement with said base,
and bolts anchored to said base and project- 'ing through clips for c amping the clips on said flange.
3. The combination with a hollow post having an inwardly directed flange at its lower end, and a supporting base for said post, of a plurality of clips of relatively v [fragile materialeach clip comprising a flat the horizontal portions of the tion resting against the base the other end or said clip resting on the said flange said clip having an opening in the horlzontal portion thereof whereb the resistance of the clip to fracture is essened, a bolt anchored in the base and engaging the opening in the clip, and means associated wlth the bolt for clampin the clip under stress, substantially as set ibrth.
5. In combination with a hollow post having an inwardly directed flange and a base for said post, a clip engaging the flange and base for maintaining the post in upright position, means for securingthe clip to the base, said clip having a.weakened portion for readily fracturing under undue stress, substantially as set forth. 4
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 1st day of October, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-one.
