PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HANSBERGER, OF MILLERSPORT, OHIO.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 18,9 16, dated January 5, 1904.
Application filed May 13, 1902. Serial lilo. 107,112. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY HANSBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millersport, in the county of Fairfieldand State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of fence-posts; and the objects of my invention are to provide a substantial and durable fence-post and base therefor of improved construction and arrangement of parts, to so construct and arrange said base and post as to insure the retention of the post in a vertical position, and to produce the same of simple and inexpensive construction. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of my improved post-base and a portion of the post connected therewith, the same being shown in connection with the ground; and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In carrying out my invention I mold or otherwise construct of cement an upright fence-post base or support 1, the latter having its lower end portion flanged laterally, as indicated at 2. The body of said post base or support may, as indicated in the drawings, be tapering toward its upper end or otherwise suitably shaped. In forming my im proved base it is made to inclose while in a plastic. mass the lower portion of a central and vertical post 3, which is preferably of metal. In order to insure the connection of the lower portion of the post 3 with thebody of the base 1, I provide a transverse opening in the lower portion of said post, through which extends a horizontal pin 4, the latter being, as prescribed for the lower portion of the post, incased by the material forming the base. The outwardly-projecting portion of the post 3 may, as indicated at 5, be formed with suitable openings or other means for connecting wires or other post-connecting parts therewith. As indicated in the drawings, the upper end portion of the base-body 1 is'adapted to be incased or surrounded by a horizontally-disposed cement block 6, the central opening of which may conform to the outline of the upper portion of said base.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown my improved base and a portion'of the post rising therefrom, said post being embedded in the earth, which is indicated in section at 7.
From this illustration it will be seen that the top block 6 and the upper end of the basebody 1 are designed to be flush with each other and with the ground-surface.
Fro theconstruction shown and described it will eadily be understood that the earth which 2- upon theupper side of the baseflange 2 and bout the body of said base will serve to hold t e latter firmly in connection with the grou 0 and that the top block 6, being, as shon, sunk, to the depth of its body in the ound, any tendency of the upper portion of the base to be moved from its vertical position will be obviated, with the result that the post will be maintained at all times rigid. It is obvious that any tendency of the post to become sufficiently loose within the base 1 to admit of its being withdrawn therefrom will be obviated by the employment of the cross locking-pin 4, which is embedded in the lower portion of said base in the manner heretofore described.
7 Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In afence-post, the combination with a base 1 comprising a solid body of cement flaring toward its lower end and formed with a baseflange, of a post extendingc'entrally through said base-body, a transverse pin 4. intersecting said post and having its ends inclosed within the base-body and a separately-formed horizontally-disposed block having a central opening therein adapted to receive the upper end of the base-body and havingits upper side flush therewith, substantially as specified.
HENRY HANSBERGER.
In presence of- O. O. SHEPHERD, P. S. KARSHNER.
