U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LENA M. WILFERT, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
POCKET-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,842, dated May 28, 1895. Application filed February 16, 1895. Serial No. 533,631. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LENA M. WILEEET, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pocket-Books, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In many instances pocket-books have been wrenched from their owners, and at times great losses sustained, particularly in cases of messengers for banks and large mercantile houses, and this invention has for its object to provide a pocket-book with an attachment by which it may be secured to the person, the securing device being adjustable in order that the pocket-book may be used or handled as desired without disconnecting it from the person.
In accordance with this invention a cord or chain is connected at one end to a spring actuated reel, contained in a suitable case, secured to the pocket-book, and the other end is adapted to be connected to the clothing, as for instance, it may be provided with a safetypin for such purpose.
Figure 1 shows in side view the pocket-book provided with a securing device embodying this invention by which it may be secured to the person; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the pocket-book and the adjustable securing device; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the springactuated reel and its inclosing-case.
' The pocketbook a is, or may be, of any usual or suitable construction and shape. Contained within it, and preferably secured to the interior of the outer casing, is a metallic shell, circular in shape and quite thin, consisting of the disk b,and the flanged disk 0, the disk I) abutting against the flange of the disk 0, and said disk 0 is provided with projections 01, which pass through holes in the disk 1) and wall 1) of the pocket book and are overturned to secure the two parts together.
Contained within the shell or casing b, c, is a flanged disk e, mounted centrally upon a stud f, secured to and projecting inwardly from the disk I), or it may be secured to the shell 0. A coiled spring is contained within the flanged diske, the inner end of which is attached to the post f, and the outer end to the disk or its flange.
A Around the perimeter of the disk e a cord or chain h is wound, one end of which is attached to the disk, and the other end passes out of the shell or casing b, 0, through a hole iand said cord 71. thence passes through an eyelet or hole j in the pocket-book, and to the extremity of said cord or chain a safety-pin A .terior the hollow shell or casing b, c, the disk 0 being provided with projections 11 which pass through casing b and wall I) of the pocket book, and are overturned to hold the parts together, the casing 11, 0, provided with a central stud f and containing the flanged disk e, having within it a coiled spring g, the inner end of which is connected to the central stud, and
the outer end with the disk, and the cord or chain 71. connected to and wound upon said disk e, passing out of the shell I), 0, through a hole "I; in the side thereof, thence through a holej in the pocket-book, and provided at its extremity with a safety-pin It, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LENA M. WILFERT. Witnesses:
B. J. NOYES, F. H. DAVIS.
