SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,195, dated May 14, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIEGFRIED SOHLESINGER, residing at the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Metallic Knockdown Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to metallic furniture adapted more especially for use in hot cli- Io mates where wooden furniture is quickly split or Warped out of shape, and where vermin are troublesome and destructive.

The invention has for its object to produce metallic furniture of knock-down construcx 5 tion, and which may be' most conveniently and economically made in one country and shipped to distant hot climates at minimum expense and with little or no danger of breakage in transit, and which may be easily set up for use, and will stand firmly, and will not warp or split, and is practically proof against destruction by vermin.

The invention is adapted more especially for embodiment in Wash-stands, and consists 2 5 in certain novel features of construction and combinations of. parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which similar numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a front perspective View of a washstand made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom perspective view 3 5 of the back of the stand. Fig. 3 is a bottom perspective view of the top of the stand. Fig. 4 is a like view, of thebottom plate or bracin gshelf of the stand. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, partly broken away, of one of the legs of the 40 stand; and Fig. 6 is a top perspective View of a washstand of different form from that shown in Fig. 1, but embodying the same principles of construction.

The knock-down wash-stand shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings, is made with a main top plate 1, sustained by four legs 2, 2, 2, 2, which in turn support the lower shelf or plate 3. At its rear part the plate 1, sustains the vertical back or Wall plate 4, of the stand. The parts 1, 3, 4, have one common feature of construction, each being made-With a comparatively thin body-plate 5, which is shaped marginally in any approved design, and at said margin has a metallic border comprising a tube 6, which is slit to receive the plate and is then clamped firmly thereto.

The top plate 1, is provided with an opening 7, adapted to receive a wash basin or bowl,

and which also has atubular metallic border 6, like that at the exterior margin of the plate. A towel rack 8, made of a bent metal rod or wire is riveted to each end of the top plate 1,

and the back plate 4, has a suitable shelf 9, also Fig. 1, of the drawings, is preferably made of a metal tube 12, provided with "one or more tubular metallic sockets 13, so formed or attached as to constitute a lateral enlargement 7 5 ofthe tubular leg. Pins14, fixed in any manner to the top plate 1, are adapted to enter the tops of all four legs 2, of the stand, and pins 15, fixed to the bottom of. the shelf 3, are adapted to enter the sockets 13, while pins 16, 8o projecting downward from the ends of the back plate 4, are adapted to enter holes 17, in the rear corners of the top plate 1.

By comparison of Figs. 2, 3, 4and 5, with Fig.

1 of the drawings, it will appear that the parts 1, 2, 3, 4, of the stand may be packed quite flatly together in small space for shipment, and that it requires buta few minutes time to assemble the parts by slipping the shelf pins 15, into the leg sockets 13; placing the pins 14, of plate 1, into the tops of the legs 2 and then slipping the back plate pins 16, into the holes 17, of the top plate, and folding the toilet soap shelf 9, down on its hinges 10, whereupon the whole stand is ready for use and makes a very firm and substantial article of furniture. The legs 2, may have any desired length or height and may have two or more series of sockets 13, to provide for two or more shelves 3, below the main top [00 plate 1, of 1 the stand; The tubnlar-ombead, like border 6, of the 'top plate 1, andshelf 3, presents a neat appearance and greatly strengthens said parts, and also retainsarticles on the top and shelf, and prevents leakage of .Water therefrom The stand shownin Fig. 6, of athedrawings is a tripod stand, having three legs instead of four, and has substantially the same general features of construction as the stand shown in Fig. 1, the only difference, aside from a change of form and size, being that the pins 15, on thelower circular shelf, 3, havethe form of L-shaped studs the outer parts of which are enlarged and, together withtportlons of their necks or stems, enter correspondinglyiformedvrecessesin the, lugs,l3*,
