To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BRYANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Pail Covers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 'Figure l is a sectional View of a fire-pail cover embodying my invention and portions of a pail, showing the cover in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the receptacle in the act of discharging the fire-extinguishing compound into the water in the firepail. Fig. 3 is a top perspective view of the cover partly broken away to show the receptacle on its under side. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the cover and receptacle, showing one manner of charging the receptacle.

My invention relates to the construction of that class of covers for fire-pails or fire buckets, which are provided with a receptacle to contain and storeadry fire-extinguishingcompound to be added to the water at the time the fire occurs.

It is a common practice to provide fire-buckets for special use in case of fire, and to suspend the same at convenient points in houses, factories, and on railroad coaches, steamboats, and other moving structures, yet for various reasons it is not desirable to fill said buckets with water, or to charge the water with chemicals until required for immediate use. Therefore a practice has grown up of providing separate packages of dry fire-extinguishing compounds to be added to the water when required.

The object of my invention is to provide a ready and secure means ofstoring the dry compound, in conjunction with a detached pail cover, and an efficient means of discharging the same into the pail at the desired moment; and to this end the main feature of my invention embraces the combination with a detached pail cover, or like detachable closure for a pail, of a tilting or pivoted receptacle attached thereto, and a scraper or equivalent means for traversing the receptacle and causing the discharge of its contents upon the tilting of said receptacle.

There are other minor features of invention, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully so that others skilled in'the art to which it appertains may apply the same.

In the drawings, A indicates the upper portion of a fire-pail or fire-bucket, with which the cover embodying my invention is designed to be used. The form or size of the pail is immaterial, as the covers will be of sufficient diameter to fit all ordinary pailsor may be made of any special size or form desired.

1 indicates the cover proper which may be of any suitable material-preferably galvanized sheet iron-and 2 the tilting receptacle (of like material) pivoted on the cover as at 3 so as to discharge downward into the bucket A. By preference the tilting receptacle 2 is of hemispherical form, and is secured to a crossbar (or diameter rod) 4 journaled on the cover as at 3, 3, and provided with a crank arm 6 or equivalent means for tilting the receptacle from above when the cover is in position on the fire-pail.

The cover 1 is formed on one side with a depression or recess 7 equal to and corresponding with one half the circle of the lip of the receptacle 2 to receive the rim of the receptacle on said side and permit of sealing the receptacle when charged, and is provided on the opposite side with a narrow semi-circular slot 8, through which the receptacle 2 can pass when tilted or rotated, said receptacle 2 being preferably journaled or pivoted axially or diametrically with relation to the circle formed by the recess 7, and semi-circular slot 8. The semi-circular slot 8 will thus form a half moon tongue 9 in the cover 1, which tongue can be slightly depressed to form a recess for the reception of the soft sealing material 10 (see Fig. 1) which aids in hermetically closing the said receptacle. The tongue 9 also serves as a scraper or means of insuring the discharge of the contents of the receptacle when the latter is tilted or rotated. An important feature in view of the fact that the compounds stored in receptacle 2 are frequently of a hygroscopic 100 nature and become incrusted on the sides of the receptacle materially interfering with the free discharge.

The construction being of the general character hereinbefore specified, the receptacle may be charged by holding the cover vertically (as shown in Fig. 4) with the receptacle 2 in ahorizontal position, and gradually bringing the two into a horizontal position so as to entrap and retain the charge, after which the receptacle is hermetically closed by applying a soft or plastic sealing material in the recess 7 on the under side of the cover and in the depression between formed by tongue 9 and the rim of the receptacle on the top of the cover as at 10.

If desired the cover may be perforated as at 11 so as to suspend it when not in use.

In case of fire, the cover will be placed upon the fire-pail, and the fire-extinguishing compound discharged into the bucket by tilting or rotating the receptacle 2, the tongue 9 cansing the full and free discharge of the material even though the same should be incrusted on the walls of the receptacle.

It is evident that the tilting receptacle 2 may be of other form than that shown and described, and that other than the shown and described means of discharging or tilting the receptacle may be employed without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Therefore,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pail-cover for fire-buckets, said cover having a receptacle attached thereto and arranged to vibrate thereon, and provided with means which traverse the vibrating reccpta' cle to cause the discharge of its contents, sub stantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The combination with a pail cover having a slot for the passage of a tilting receptacle, of a compound receptacle pivoted on said cover and arranged to vibrate through the slot in the cover; substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. The combination with a pail cover having a sealing recess and a slot for the passage of a tilting receptacle, of a tilting receptacle pivoted on said cover and arranged to vibrate through said slot in the cover; substantially as and for the purposes specified.

4. The combination with a pail cover having a semicircular slot and a semi-circular sealing! recess, of a hemispherical receptacle journaled on said cover diametrically with relation to the slot and recess; substantially as and for the purposes specified.
