PASTE-RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,990, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed September 15,1900. Serial No. 30,113. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST N. Rrrz, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paste-Re ceptacles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates especially to receptacles for containing prepared paste, mucilage, and analogous adhesive material; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my present in- Vention, partially broken away to better illustrate certain details of construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of said device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the said device omitting the hinged portion of the cover and with the cover-plate and ring partially broken away. Fig. A is an under side plan View of the hinged part of the cover.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the receptacle for paste, mucilage, or analogous adhesive material, and B designates a brushwell, which is entirely exterior to the pastereceptacle A, the latter being free from any interior partition, but the parts A and B being preferably formed integrally with each other, with the part B terminating on a plane below that of the top of the main receptacle A. The parts A B may be formed of any suitable material; but in practice I have found glass to well serve the purpose. The upper exterior part of the receptacle A, above the plane of the receptacle B, is shown provided with spirally-arranged lugs 19 b for engagement' with correspondingly-arranged depressions o a, formed in the annular vertical wall of the flanged ring 0, the latter being preferably of sheet metal. In the illustration given the horizontal flange of said ring 0 is continued, so as to form a plate D, which in practice extends over about one-half of the receptacle A when the parts are put together, as best indicated in Fig. 3. If desired, instead of the described spirally-arranged lugs 19 and corresponding depressions 0 both parts A and C may be formed with ordinary or broken screw-threads; but I prefer the construction shown, as thereby the ring 0 will always stop at precisely the same point when it is secured to the receptacle A to its fullest extent without the need of any care or calculation.
E represents a flat plate forming part of the hinged top of my device, and this is also preferably formed of sheet metal, the said plate E being of the proper size and shape to cover the opening in the horizontal part of the flanged ring 0, and in the illustration given this plate E is of a generally semicircular shape; but of course if the plate D were decreased in width or omitted the plate E would have to be correspondingly increased in width or size, so as to properly cover the receptacle A.
F is a dome formed, preferably, integrally with the plate E, each of these parts having a depending flange, (marked ef,respectively,) the flange e of the plate Efitting closely over the adjacent portion of the outer wall of the ring 0 and the flangefof the dome F extending downward to a greater distance, so as to slip overthe exterior wall of the receptacle B and close the same. The plate E is hinged to the cover-ring O or its plateD in any suitable manner-as, for example, by the hingestraps g g h, united by a wire or other pintle d.
G represents a gasket or ring of flexible material (such as india-rubber or pasteboard) interposed between the top of the receptacle A and the under side of the horizontal flange of the ring 0, and, if desired, there may be a pasteboard or analogous disk used in place of or in addition to this gasket G to better seal the package during storage or transporta'tion.
By reason of the described construction a brush having a handle of suitable length for convenient use may be kept within the receptacle B entirely without the paste-receptacle A, the described dome accommodating the brush-handle when that and the brush together are of greater height than that of the paste-receptacle A, and yet all may be securely covered, to the exclusion of air, by the single hinged cover E F, and while I have illustrated the preferred construction of my device and ordinarily regard the hinged construction of the closing device desirable it is obvious that the described simultaneous closure of bpth the main receptacle A and the exterior receptacle B by a single cover could be accomplished irrespective of any question of hinging the parts together, and hence my device may be modified and its mechanical construction varied within the scope of my claims without departure from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A paste-receptacle, comprising a jar having an annular outer wall of uniform height, in combination with a brush-receptacle exterior to the outer wall of said jar, and a cover for simultaneously closing both receptacles, said cover having a plate in close proximity to the top of said jar, so as to shut olf from the interior of the jar any air in the exterior brush-receptacle.
2. A paste receptacle formed integrally with an exterior brush-receptacle, in combination with a flanged ring secured to the paste-receptacle, and a cover for simultaneously closing both receptacles, said cover comprising a plate secured to said ring for closing the paste-receptacle and a domed extension rising above the plane of said plate for receiving the projecting handle of a brush in the exterior receptacle.
3. In a receptacle for paste or analogous adhesive material, the combination with the main receptacle of an exterior receptacle formed integrally therewith and terminating at a plane below that of the said main receptacle, a flanged ring secured to said main receptacle above the plane of said exterior receptacle and a cover hinged to said ring, and adapted to simultaneously close both receptacles;
4. In a receptacle for paste or other adhesive material, the combination withthe main receptacle of an exterior receptacle formed integrally therewith and terminating at a plane below that of the said main receptacle, a ring secured to said main receptacle above the plane of said exterior receptacle, and having a horizontal flange covering part of said main receptacle, and a cover comprising a plate provided with a domed extension rising above the plane of the plate proper, the said plate and its extension having downward-projecting flanges, for simultaneously closing the opening in the main receptacle and the exterior receptacle.
' 5. A paste-receptacle, comprising a cylindrical chamber free from internal divisions or compartments, in combination with a brushreceptacle composed of a portion of the wall of the said cylindrical chamber, and independent bottom and outer walls wholly exterior to the wall of said cylindrical chamber but formed integrally therewith, and a cover for simultaneously closing both receptacles,
- said cover comprising a plate for closing the paste-receptacle and said plate having a domed extension rising above the plane of said plate for receiving the projecting handle of a brush in the exterior receptacle.
6. A paste-receptacle, comprising a cylindrical chamber free from internal divisions or compartments, in combination with a brushreceptacle composed of a portion of the wall of the said cylindrical chamber and independent bottom and outer walls wholly exterior to the wall of said cylindrical chamber but formed integrally therewith, the said outer wall of the brush-receptacle terminating at a plane below that of the said pastereceptacle, and a cover for simultaneously closingboth receptacles, the said cover comprising a vertically-flanged plate for closing the paste-receptacle, and a domed extension risingabove the plane of said plate for receiving the projecting handle of a brush in the exterior receptacle and having a vertically-depending flange extending below the plane of said plate.
7. A paste-receptacle comprising a jar free from internal divisions or compartments, in combination with a brush-receptacle exterior thereto and a cover for simultaneously closing both receptacles, said cover comprising a plate for closing the plate-receptacle and a domed extension rising above the plane of said plate for receiving the projecting handle of a brush in the exterior receptacle.
8. A combined paste-jar and brush-receptacle, the latter being formed integrally with but wholly exterior to the said jar, and terminating at a plane below that of the said jar, in combination with a common cover provided with depending vertical flanges, and having a domed extension for closing the brush-receptacle and inclosing the projecting handle of a brush contained therein,the flange on said domed extension depending to a plane below that of the flange on the otherportion of said common cover.
9. A paste-receptacle com prising'a jar free from internal divisions or compartments, in combination with a brush-receptacle formed integrally with said jar but wholly exterior thereto, and terminating below the plane of the paste-receptacle, and a cover for simultaneously closing both receptacles, said cover comprising a plate adapted when in position to come in close proximity to the upper edges of the paste-receptacle and said plate having a domed extension for inclosing the project ing'handle of a brush in said exterior receptacle, said domed extension having a vertically-depending flange projecting below the top edges of the exterior receptacle.
10. A paste-receptacle comprising a jar free from internal divisions or compartments, in combination-with a brush-receptacle of less diameter than that of the said jar,and formed integrally therewith but wholly exterior thereto, in combination with a cover adapted when in position to come in close proximity to the upper edges of said jar and having an intein closing position, beyond and practically outside the line of the wall of the said jar, and in line with the wall of the said exterior receptacle for the reception of the projecting handle of a brush in said exterior receptacle.
