Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI H. THOMAs-or WATEEEUEY, VERMONT.
IMPROVED MOP-HEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,704, dated April 3, 1866.
To all whom t'maf/ concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI H. THOMAS, of Waterbury, Vin the county of YVashington, in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Clamps or Holders for Adjusting and Holding the Mop in Mop-Sticks; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l represents my improvement in the construction of the bent-wire so as to facilitate the putting in and adjusting the mop. Fig. 2 shows another mode of forming the wire so as to produce the same result.
The object of my Ainvention and improvement in spring-heads for mop-sticks is to enable the women and children who use them to easily put in and tighten up the substance of which the mop or scrubber is composed.
My invention consistsin the elongation and form of the bent-wire which forms the clamp or vice to hold the mop to the head, so that a woman or child can, by compressing the portion that forms the handles for that purpose, easily put in or in any way adjust the mop or scrubber without the danger of scratching or otherwise injuring the hand-a thing' which is not uncommon with mop-sticks somewhat similarly constructed now in the market. i
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improved mop-stick, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
The head A may be made of hard wood or of cast metal, having a hole or a socket, a, in the center, in which to secure the stick or handle B in the ordinary manner. At a short y distance from the socket a, on the handle B, is
secured a link or ring of metal, C, it having ears, or, more properly speaking, rings or eyes c c, projecting outin a line parallel with the head A, the openings in the eyes c c being so shaped as to form catches which will fit into notches or ratchets d d made on the bent-wire D, which is designed to form the clamp that holds the cordage or other substance for mopping or scrubbing, the bentwire D being so shaped as to fit in a groove in the under side ofthe head a and in notches b b, to hold it in its place in the head A, so that the opening' between the bottom of the wire -and the head may be sufcient to take in the required substance to form the mop.
rIhe bent-wire D, in which my invention and improvement consists, passes up by the side of the stick B. The ratchets cl d, formed on the Wire D, pass up through the eyes c c of the link C, so that they will hold the wire in any position that it may be placed; but in order that it may be easily operated by the hand to putin and tightly secure the mop, I have found it necessary to have handles E E, to protect the ratchets and prevent the hand from being caught and torn by the notches CZ d while taking out and putting in the substance to form the mop or scrubber. I make the handles or shield E E, as seen in Fig. l, by having the wireD extend beyond the ratchets d el, and turn over outward sufficient to meet the requirements. In Fig. 2 the notches are made the reverse on the ends of the wire and turn inward, and operate through the eyes c c, in the same manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The handles or guards E E, on the wire D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
LEVI H.- THOMAS.
