Description

(No Model.) I
J. H. REYNOLDS.
' SPITTOON.
No. 535,600. Patented MaIalZ, 1895..-

TED STATES PATENT SPITTOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,600, dated March 12, 1895.
Application filed December 13, 1894. Serial No. 531,674. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgway, in the county of Elk, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Spittoons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to spittoons and particularly to one adapted for use in hotels, restaurants, depots and other public places.
The object of the invention is to provide a spittoon that can be quickly and easily cleaned, and one thatcannot be turned over or otherwise injured.
My spittoon can also be connected with a drain, if desired, and if necessary can be made in a number of sections.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in a suitable receptacle having devices for the attachment of a lifting bail or.
handle, a removable cover, and means for holding said cover in place.
My invention consists also in certain novelties of construction and combinations all of which will be fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l, is a view showing my device in place against a counter or bar. Fig. 2, is a detail view of the top or cover.
Referring to the drawings, A, indicates the floor of a building, and B, a counter of a hotel, or the bar of a restaurant.
My improved spittoon O, is arranged atthe bottom of the counter or bar, and comprises "a receptacle or spittoon proper C, and a removable cover 0, said cover being made trough shaped and having longitudinal openings C in the bottom thereof. This cover rests loosely upon the top of the receptacle 0, and is held against displacement by means of hooks or catches D, D, driven into the counter or bar, and adapted to overlap the inner edge of the cover or top. The outer edge is beaded a drain pipe F, with the spittoon and with this convenience it is only necessary to flush the spittoon out to cleanse the same. When such pipe cannot be attached, however, I make the receptacle and cover in sections, the cover sec tion being notched at the-ends to fit the receptacle snugly, and still join each other end to end. Thus when it is desired to clean the spittoon, the brace rod or arm or hook is removed, the cover removed from beneath the hooks, and the receptacle removed and cleaned. When the receptacle is cleaned, it is again set in place, the cover is then arranged beneath the hooks on the counter or bar, and the brace rod setup. The device is then complete again and ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire tosecnre by Letters Patout, is
1. The combination with the counter, of the hooks driven therein, the receptacle or spittoon proper, and a trough shaped cover or top, the inner edge of which fits beneath the hooks of the counter, and a brace arm adapted to support the outer edge of the cover, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the counter, of the hooks driven therein, the receptacle or spittoon proper, and a trough shaped coveror top, the inner edge of which fits beneath the hooks of the counter, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
