SANFORD VHEELER CARTER, OF DENVER, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO TIMOTHY EDVARD DONOVAN, OF SAME PLACE.
INK-WELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,571, dated March 12, 1895.
i Application led .Tune l2, 1894. Serial No. 514,286. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD WHEELER CARTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink- Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others 1o skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ink wells for school and other desks, and its object is to provide the cup which holds the ink bottle with a coiled spring interposed below the said bottle, whereby the latter is forced up into close proximity to the central opening in the cap zo plate, so that a pen can be readily inserted in its mouth; also to provide means for locking the cap plate so as to prevent the removal thereof by unauthorized persons, and nally to provide a pivoted cover on the under side z5 of the cap plate for closing the central opening therein.
rlhe invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
3o In the accompanying drawings: Figure lis a horizontal sectional view of an ink well constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a portion ot' a desk top with which it is connected. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view, looking from the under side,
ofthe cap plate. Fig. et is a longitudinal sectional view. t
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a portion of a desk top, formed 4o with a circular opening, having an annular iiange, 2, at its lower side and two annular grooves, 3 and et, at the upper-portion.
The numeral 5 designates acup having an outwardly extending annular fiange, 6, at its upper end which engages with the flange, 2, so as to hold the cup in place. On this cup is located a coiled spring, 7, upon which is seated the ink bottle, 8, having a neck, 9.
Locatedin the top groove, 4, is a circular 5o cap plate, 10, having a lug, 12, which projects beyond the periphery thereof and engages in the groove, 3, below. Pivoted to the under side of this cap plate is a pivoted lever, 12a, having its outer end bent upwardly and outwardly forming a catch, 13, which also engages 5 5 with said groove, 3. A spring, 14, secured to the cap plate has its free end bearing against the inner end of the lever, so as to force said catch into engagement with the groove. When said lug and catch are engaged with the 6o groove, the cap plate is securely held in place. A key hole, 15, is formed in the cap plate for the insertion of a key whereby the lever may be actuated to disengage the catch from the groove and allow the cap plate to be removed.
Pivoted to the under side of the cap plate is a covering plate, 16, having a pin, 17., which projects up through a slot, 18, in said plate. This slot intersects the central opening, 19, of the plate. 7o
In operation the ink bottle is inserted in the cup and the cap plate locked in position, the coiled spring, 7, forcing the ink bottle up against the covering plate. To use the ink well, the covering plate is pushed to one side by means of the pin uncovering the central opening so that a pen can be readilyiuserted in the bottle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a desk top or other object having a circular opening therein `formed with an annular fiange and annular grooves, of the cup, having an annular flange seated on said iiange, the coiled spring and ink bottle located therein, the circular plate seated in one of said grooves having a central opening, an intersecting slot and a key hole, the covering plate pivoted to said circular plate and provided with a pin projecting 9o through said slot, the lug at the edge of the circular cap plate, and the pivoted spring actuated lever having a catch at its outer end, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a desk top or other object having a recess, provided with an inwardly extending annular iiange at its lower end and with annular grooves at its upper end, of the cup having a fiange seated on said fiange, the coiled spring or flexible cushion Ico located therein, the ink bottle seated upon said spring or fiexible cushion, the cap plate having a central opening and pivoted @over and the pivoted catch engaging with one of 'l 'l l 'I f 1 1 3. ihecombmatlon mi 1e r @salop o1 ot 1er 5 object having an opening therein formed wlth a liange and grooves, of the cup having a flange seated on said flange and ink bottle located therein, the cap-plate having a oentral opening seated in one of said grooves, an 1o intersecting slot and a. key hole, the covering plate pivoted to said cap-plate and provided with a pin projecting through said slot, the lug at the edge of the cap-plate, and the pivoted spring actuating lever having a catch at 15 its outer end, Substantially as described.
e combination with th degl: top or 4, e other objeethaving an@ @ning th reln forruea. vith an invardly exten ing annu a1- flange at the cap plete having e central opening' sealed in one of said grooves, an intersecting slot,
the covering plate pivoted to said cap plate and provided with a, pin projecting through 25 said slot, the lug at the edge of the cap plate having a catch at its outer end, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed rny Signature 3o in presence of two Witnesses.
SANFORD WIJEELER CARTER.
