INK WELL HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED 11110.25, 1011 Patented Oct. 27, 1914 v m f/ UNITED STAIRS PAH'IEN'I UFFICE.
GUSTAV J. SENGBUSCH, OF `IlVfIIfWAUKEI:Ely WISCONSIN.
INKf-WELL HOLDER.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GUs'rAv J. SENGBUson, a citizen of the United StatesVresiding in the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink- Well Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in inkwell holders and refers more particular-ly to a construction in which the inkwell is seated in an aperture of a desk top.
Among the salient objects of the invention are to provide in a construction of the character referred to, simple and novel means for detachably and automatically securely locking the well within the holder; to provide a novel form of key mechanism for releasing the well from the holder in order that the former may be reiilled or cleaned; to provide a construction in which the keys may be made individual to the holder thus preventing any surreptitious removal of the well; to provide a construction in which the holder or socket for the well as well as the key may be economically made from a single stamping; to provide a construction which is simple and economical in manufacture, presents an attractive appearance on a desk and is characterized by the ease with which the well may be inserted in or removed from the holder; and in general to provide `an improved construction of the character referred to.
The invention consists in the matters here after described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a view partly in said elevation and partly in vertical section showing the well in position within the holder; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the well; Fig. 3 is also a perspective view showing the releasing key in position within the holder or socket; Fig. 4l is a vertical sectional view showing the key in place within the socket, the well however, being shown in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken through lines 5-5 of Figli looking in the direction of the arrows.`
Referring to the drawingsf-l designates the inkwell which may be of any desired type, being in the present instance, circular in cross section and provided with a reduced lower end 2., having a circumferential extending groove 3 for a purpose herein- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 26, 1911.

after described. The internal construction of the well is not shown inasmuch as it` forms no part of the present invention.
In the top of the desk A1, is a suitable aperture 5, within which is secured the holder or socket member G. This holder or socket member is preferably stamped from a single piece of metal and comprises a ring 7, inturned flange S and radially disposed locking lugs or tongues 9. The lower ends of these lugsare bent inwardly to forni locking lips 10. rlhe ring 7 of the socket memberis screwed or otherwise secured to the periphery of the aperture #1; the socket be ing preferably counter-sunk so as to lie flush with the face of the desk. W hen the well is seated within the socket or holder the locking lips 10 of the tongues 9 snap into the groove 3 and automatically lock the well in the holder'. The lower edge of the groove 3 is horizontal as shown at 12 while the upper edge is beveled as shown at 11. As the well is inserted into the holder the spring tongues 9 are forced slightly outwardly until the lips 10 reach the groove 3, when they automatically snap into locking position. The shoulder 12 effectively prevents the well from being removed as long as the locking lips are within the groove. The simple yet effective manner in which the well is locked within the socket is apparent. In order to release the well from the socket I provide a key designated as a whole 13 and comprising a base portion 141, a ring 15 and radially disposed tongues or lugs 16, preferably widened at their upper ends as shown at 17. In order to release the Well by means of this key the latter is merely inserted over the lower end or base of the well and then turned in either direction. The upper ends of the lugs or tongues 16 will pass under the tongues 9 and force the locking lips out of the annular groove 3, the well may then be withdrawn. The operation is so simple as to need no further description. It is to be noted that the base of the key fits over the lower end of the well so that the release tongues 1G are always properly centered when the key is being used. The key as well as the holder may be stamped from a single piece of metal. i
The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a desk, having Patented Oct.` 27, 1914.
an aperture in its top, of a socket member secured in said aperture and having a plurality of radially disposed spring tongues, inturned locking lips at the ends of said tongues, a Well having a reduced annular extension adapted to be seated in said holder, and pro 7ided With an annular lock-- uiggroove for receiving said locking lips and a removable key member having an annular base portion adapted to lit over the lower end of the Well and provided With a plurality of rip-standing tongues for torcing said locking lips out of said groove to release the Well.
2. rllhe combination with a desk having an aperture in its top, oi a holder secured Within said aperture and having a plurality of radially disposed tongues provided at their louer4 ends with locking lips, an inku'ell having a reduced lovver end adapted to fit Within said holder and provided with an annular groove With which said locking lips engage and a removable key mechanism for forcing said lips out of said groove to release the Well.
3. rlhe combination With a desk having an aperture in the top thereor", of an ink- \vell having a reduced extension fitting Within said aperture, said extension being provided with an annular locking groove, a holder secured Within said aperture, spring locking tongues carried by said holder and adapted to have locking engagement Vwith said groove and a removable key member for forcing said tongues out of their groove to release the Well.
l. The combination With a desk having an aperture in its top, of a Well seated within said aperture and having an annu*- lar locking groove, spring tongues secured Within said aperture and adapted to have locking engagement 'with said groove and a removable annular key member having fingers for forcing said tongues out of said groove to release the Well.
5. The combination With an inkwell having an annular locking groove, of a holder tor receiving said Well, siring locking tongues carried by said holder and adapted to automatically snap into the locking groove when the well is inserted Within the holder and a remomble key member for 4forcing the tongues out of said groove to release the Well.
6. The combination with an ink Well hav-- ing a flange and a reduced extension below said liange, said extension having a grooved portion, of a holder receiving said Well and having a plurality of spaced apart spring-locking lingers adapted to engage said grooved portion, and a key-member having a plurality oit ngers for forcing the lirst-mentioned lingers yout of said grooved portion to release vthe Well.
7. lThe combination with an ink Well provided with an annular flange at its upper end and a reduced annular extension at its lower end having a circumferential extending locking groove, of a holder for receiving said well comprising a ring having a plurality -of circumferentially disposed spring locking fingers, and a removable key member comprising a ring having a plurality of circumferentially disposed lingers for forcing the lirst mentioned lingers out 0Ip said groove to release the Well.
8. rldhe combination With a desk having an aperture in its top, of a socket member litting said aperture and formed with an external flange resting upon the top of the desk around said aperture and further 'formed with a plurality of depending spring tongues having inwardly turned locking-lips at their lower ends, a vvell having a reduced annular extension seated in said holder andprovided with an annular locking groove for receiving said lockinglips, and a removable key-member adapted to engage the Well from beneath and pro-l vided With a plurality of upstanding tongues for forcing said locking-lips out ot' said grooves to release the Well.
9. The combination With a desk having an aperture in its top, ot a socket member litting said aperture and formed ivith an external flange resting upon the top` of the desk around said aperture and further formed with a plurality of uniformly spaced depending spring tongues having inwardly turned locking-lips at their loiver ends, a Well having a reduced annular eX- tension seated in said holder and provided With an annular locking groove for receivsaid locking-lips, and a removable keymember having an annular base portion adapted to lit over the loiver end oi the Well and provided With a plurality of upstanding tongues adapted, upon a turning movement of said key-member, to force said locking-lips out of said groove to release the Well.
