VBe it known that l, ABRAHAM J. SoHUL'rz, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county ofEsseX and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lvlounting provements in the attachment of naps, caps,

top-mounts, or knobs to ends of hollow or tubular bed-posts, curtain-rods, and the like; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel means and method of securing naps, caps, top-mounts, knobs, or the like, upon the ends of hollow or tubular elements, such as bed-posts, curtain or portiere-rods, or the like, with a view of providing a self-locking nap, cap, topmount, or knob, which is simply pushed into position over the end of the hollow or tubular element, and retained in a positively Xed and non-detachable relation to the end of the said hollow or tubular element.

The invention, therefore, has for its principal object to positively unite by means of a self-locking means ornamental naps, caps, top-mounts, knobs, or the like, over the ends of hollow or'tubular elements, such as metal bed-posts', curtain poles and other rods, in a most elicient and simple mannen-without the use of the usual pin-screws, or rivets, or without soldering, at the same time providing a method by means of which the various elements mentioned are readily vand quickly united, at a considerable reduction in the cost Y of manufacture, and in a most effective manner.

In the practice of mounting naps, caps, top-mounts, knobs, or the like over the ends of hollow or tubular posts, poles, or rods, as at present, the sheet-metal naps, caps, topmounts, knobs, or the like, are` slipped over the ends of such posts, poles, or rods, and are then secured in place by means of pin-screws, which, it has been found in practice, soon work loose, and often are lost, thus leaving the closing ornament in an unsecure position upon the end of the post, pole or rod, with the possibility of the loose ornament working off and also becoming lost. ln some instances the said end ornaments are riveted or soldered to the ends -of the posts, poles, or rods, but this entails a tedious operation, with considerable cost in the manufacture,- all of which is desirable to avoid; and, the invention has for its further object to provide a self-locking nap, cap, ,top-mount, knob, or the like, which by being secured over the end of the hollow or tubular post, pole, or rod in the manner hereinafter more fully set forth, overcomes the objectionable features mentioned in the above.

Vith the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel nap, cap, top-mount or the like for hollow or tubular posts, poles or rods, hereinafter set forth; and, the present invention consists, furthermore, in the novel means and method of uniting the nap, cap, top-mount, knob, or the like in its fixed position upon the end of a hollow'or tubular bed-post, curtain-pole, rod, or the like, and in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which willbe more fully described in the following specification, and then iinally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.

YThe present invention is clearly illust rated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents' in elevation a fragmentary portion of the usual tubular or hollow metal bed-post and an ornamental nap or cap mounted and secured thereon according to the principles of the present invention. and Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional representation of the said ornament nap or cap, with a portion of the bed-post shown in elevation, and a part of the upper end of the said post represented broken away, to illustrate more particularly the securing or holding means with which the nap or cap is provided to positively secure the-same upon the end of the post. Figures 3 and el are detail sectional representations of fragmentary portions of tubular posts and ornamental naps or caps, said views illustrating slight modifications of the fastening means for securing ornamental .naps or caps upon the ends of posts.

Similar' characters of reference are employed in the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the several figures oftheA comprises the main ornamental body or member 2, the lower portion of which is formed with a throat 3, the opening of which is of the same cross-sectional area as that of the post 1, so as to be readily slipped over the end of the post,rastw1ll be clearly evident. As indicted in the drawing, the upper and outwardly flaring portion t of the said body or member 2 is bounded by an upwardly extendlng rib or projection, as 5, terminating in a laterally extending annular element, as G, Extending upwardly from said annular element 6, is an annular flange-like element, as 7, said element 7 providing a collar about which is fitted the annular flange-like portion 9 of an ornamental closing topor element 8. The Said top 8 is lsecured in place by means ofthe inwardly turned marginal edge 10 of the said flange-like portion 9, the said marginal edge 10 being securely forced or pressed into the annular offset which is formed by the annular elements 5 and 6, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figures 2, 3 and 11 of the drawings.

Referring now more particularly to Fig-V ure 2 of the drawings, suitably fitted within the annular flange-like element 7 is a postreceiving and nap or cap-seating element comprising a member 11 formed with an annularoff-set 12 for seating upon the corresponding ofl-set portion formed by the annular elements 5 and 6. Extending downwardly andinwardly from said annular olfset 12 is a basefmember 13, which is marginally curved, as at 14, and thenv extended annularly, upwardly and outwardly, as yat 15, the upper marginal edgefportion of the member or portion 15, having an inwardly extending fiange 16. These parts, as will be seen from an inspection of said Figure 2, provide a'stop-member having a receiving chamber in which the upper endfportion of the said post 1 is inserted and fitted against the said flange 16 which serves as a stop, as willbe understood.

That the said ornamental nap or cap thus provided will be positively and securely fastened upon the end-portion of the post 1 to prevent a loose fit and to guard against any displacement of the nap or cap from the end of the post, the diameter across the marginally curved portion 14; being slightly tion 14 of the base-member 13 is made with a multiplicityV of serrations, sharp projections, or other biting elements, as 17, which securely imbed themselves inthe outer surface-port1ons of the inserted end of the post 1, whereby' the said ornamentalnap orV cap is securely fastened and seated in'its position upon the end of the post, against a loose fit or accidental displacement.

From the foregoing description of my present invention', andrfrom an inspection Vof Vthe several figures of the drawings, it will y a nmltiplicityV be clearly seen, that the various parts are easily and quickly brought into their assembled and positively united relation, without the use of pin-screws, rivets, or solder, as heretofore, so that thereby the parts are more quickly united, and the cost of the manufacture greatly reduced, because the uncertain operation of inserting a clinching or riveting tool within the assembled tubular or hollow members is clearly avoided.

I am aware, therefore, that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as described in the said specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangement and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

I claim Y v 1. In combination with an element, as a metal bed-post, rod or pole, an ornamental nap, and an interiorly disposed seating element provided with a central open portion, said seating element having a stop-member surrounding said opening and provided with a chambered portion for the reception of the endsportion of said post, rod or pole, said chambered portion comprising an annular wall, and a multiplicity of biting serrations connected with and extending from said wall, said serrations being adapted to be forced into holding engagement with said post, rod or pole, when the end-portion of the same is inserted in the chambered portion of said stop-member.

2. In combination with an element, as a metal bed-post, rod or pole, an ornamental nap comprising a hollow body, and a seating element within said body, said seating ele ment comprising a base-member formed with a centrally disposed marginal curved portion, an annularly disposed wall extending upwardly from said curved portion, and

an annular stop-flange projecting inwardly from said wall, all arranged and constructed to provide a chamber for the reception of the end-portion of said'post, rod or pole, and a multiplicity of biting serrations connected with and extending from said mar` ginal curved portion adapted to be forced into holding engagement with said post, rod

or pole, when the end-portion of the same is forced into said chamber.

3. An ornamental nap comprising a hollow body and a seating element extending transversely across said body, said seating element comprising a base-member formed with a centrally disposed marginal curved portion, an annularly disposed wall extending upwardly from said curved portion, an

annularly disposed stop-flange projecting inwardly from said wall, and a multiplicity of biting serrations connected with and extending from said marginal curved portionu 4. An ornamental nap comprising a hollow body provided within said body with an annular seating element, said annular element being provided with a centrally disposed post-receiving opening surrounded by an annular wall, said wall having multiplicity of biting serrations.

5. An ornamental nap for a metal bedpost, rod or pole, comprising a chambered cap formed with a downwardly and inwardly flaring tubular post-receiving member, said member at its free end having a post-engaging throat, combined with an auxn iliary post-receiving element disposed and. marginally secured within said chambered cap, said auxiliary post-receiving element having a centrally disposed opening in alinement with the throat of said cap, for the reception of a post and retention of the nap upon the post by a biting action of the marginal edge bounding the central opening of said auxiliary post-receiving element.

G. In combination with a hollow element, as a metal bed-post, rod or pole, an ornamental chambered cap formed with a downwardly and inwardly Haring tubular postreceiving member, said member at its lower end having a post-engaging throat, and an independent auxiliary post-receiving elcment within said chambered cap and marginally secured thereto, said auxiliary postreceiving element having a centrally disposed open portion in alinement with said post-receiving throat, for the reception of a post and retention of the nap upon the post by a biting action of the marginal edge bounding the central opening of said auxiliary post-receiving element.
