SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,21 5, dated March 5, 1895.

Application filed January 3, 1 8 94- Serial No. 495,531. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, ROBERT LONG, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in invalid beds; and my invention consists in certain features of novelt-y hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

Figure I, shows a side elevation of a bed with my improvements thereto attached. Fig. II, represents a top view of the same. Fig. III, is an end View thereof, showing the mechanism whereby it is operated.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

1, is a support upon which the head and shoulders of the invalid rest, the cushion or mattress 2, being interposed to relieve the hardness of the support, the mattress being held in place by the loops 33, passing around the pins 4.

5, are arms pivoted to the rails 6, of the bed and bearing the support.

7, are arms extending lengthwise of the bed, each arm having the curved portion 8, and adjustable upon the support by the eyes 9, engaging the pins 10.

11, is a beltconnecting the lower ends of the arms 5, with the shaft 12, being secured to (she rod 13, between said arms at their lower en s.

14, is a cog wheel on the shaft 12, with which engages the pinion 15, on shaft 16. One end of the shaft 16, is provided with a removable handle 17, and with the ratchet wheel 18, with which engages the pawl 19, the purpose of which is to retain the mechanism when the belt is wound upon the shaft raising the support to the elevated position, shown by the dotted lines in Fig. I. p

By turning the handle 17, the belt 11, is wound upon the shaft 12 and thus the support is raised to any desired position, the invalid reclining thereon being assisted to retain his position on the mattress and support by the engagements of the curved portions 8, of the arm 7, under his arms, said curved portions, or the entire arm 7, being upholstered to protect the body of the invalid. It is thus seen that a means is provided for adjusting and changing the position of the invalid easily, without lifting and without jar.

Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An invalid bed comprising the side rails 6, arms 5 pivoted to the rails, a support 1, secured to the'arms 5, pins 4: upon the outer sides and top of the said support, arms 7 which have eyes 9 and portions 8 which curve outward from the support 1,pins 10 for each arm for adjusting either of the same either lengthwise of, or across the support 1, a mattress 2 located between the support 1 and the arms 7, and loops 3, connecting the said mattress to the pins 4 and means for turning the arms 5 to different positions upon the said projections.
