UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT-F. SUPPLEE, OF NELSONVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.156,318, dated October 27,1874; application filed August 1,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. SUPPLEE, of Nelsonville, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Bed, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a mattress-supportin g frame divided in the middle longitudinally; also divided in three sections transversely, and hinged together, and supported by springs upon two middle supports and two end supports, so arranged on springs and provided with adjusting-levers that either end or side of the bed may be raised and supported higher than the opposite side or end for the benefit of invalids, and for other purposes.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved bed. Fig. 2 is a plan View without the mattress-holding frame, and
Fig. 3 is a plan of the mattress-holder.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the two middle sections of the mattress-supporting frame, B the two sections of one end, and O the two sections of the other end, all being hinged together in a line along the middle by the hinges D, so that all the sections can be raised and lowered at the outside on the axis of hinges D, and the end sections B and O are hinged to the ends of middle sections A at E, so as to be raised and The middle sections are mounted on springs F, which rest on sections Gr of a platform, which are mounted on springs H, which tend to swing the outer edges of the mattress-support upward, but are held by a lover, I, and a notchedbar, J. The end sections B and G are similarly mounted on other sections, K and L, which are, in like manner, mounted on springs H to swing them up at the end, but have levers I and notched bars J to hold them back, the bars being ar-- ranged to hold them at a greater or less eleva- I tion, as it may be required to do. The leve?s have an extensible section, M, arranged to slide back on them under the bed out of the way after being used, and to be extended through the side of the bed for use.
By this contrivance it will be seen that either side or end of the bed may be raised or lowered at will for the convenience and comfort of invalids.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the hinged sections A A B B O O and adjustable frame K G G L, the said sections and frames being connected by intermediate springs, as and for the purpose A specified.
ALBERT F. SUPPLEE.
