UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. GIPE, DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,063, dated February 237, 1883.
Application filed October 25, 1882. (No model.)
Toall whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. GIPE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and .State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of spring bed-bottoms ot' that class designed to be made adjustable to suit dil'erent widths of bedstead 5 and the invention consstsin thepeculiar construction, arrangement, and various combinations of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 is a bottom plan of my improved bed-bottom. Fig. 2s a bottom perspective of one of the sections detached'. Y
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the longitudinal sections of woven wire which form the support for the mattress. Each end of these sections is rigidly secured t0 the head and foot blocks, B, which are connected together in pairs by the longitudinal bars D.
E represents guide-bars, `one end of each ot' which is rigidly `secured at one point to the head and foot blocks, the opposite ends ot' such guide-bars E being free to slide in recesses in the ends of the bars D, and beneath their respective head and foot blocks, a suitable stop, a, being employed to prevent the sections being entirely drawn apart.
F represents levers, which are pivoted -or fulcrumed to the intermediate bars, D, and near the ends thereof. The two in ner'ends of these levers are pivoted together, as shown, and are connected togetherby the stiffrod G,while their outer ends are pivotally connected to the inner ends of the links H, the outer ends of the lat, ter of which are connected, to the outer longitudinal bars, D. l
I represents coil-springs, two or more of which are secured to the under face of each of the woven-wire sections A, while their lower ends are properly secured upon the longitudinal rods or wiresJ, the ends of each of which are secured to the head and foot blocks of each section, by means of a screw-bolt or hooks', K, in such a manner that the tension of these rods J may be regulated as desired.
By this construction and arrangement of parts it will readily be seen that the bed-bottom can easily be adj usted so as to fit bedsteads of different widths, and that by the arrangement of levers and links described the sections are simultaneously adjusted. It will also be seen that by the employment of the coilsprings described to support the woven spring any one section can be reenforced or stiened by increasing the tension of the longitudinal wires or-r0ds J, upon which the springs find their resistance as against an outward pressure, and that by diminishing the tension of these rods greater elasticity will be given.
What I claim as my invention isl. A spring bed-bottom composed of longitudinal sections connected together by the links H, and lever F, connected at one end directly to the links and at the other end to an operating-rod G, whereby all the sections may be equally and simultaneously adjusted to and from each other for the purpose of employment in bedsteads of different widths, substantially as described. 1
2. A 'spring bedbottom composed of the longitudinal woven-wire sections A, mounted upon head and foot blocks B and connected together by longitudinal bars D, and the sections connected together by a system of levers, by means of which such sections will be simultaneously adjusted, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A spring bed-bottom constructed of longitudinal sections, substantially as described,
and provided with re-ent'orced springs l, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
