'Palcemcnno HOLDER.
srncricn'rton forming pan of Letters Patent No. 534,799, dated Febmary'ee, ieee .f
V Application tiled June 22,1 894. Serial No. 515,396. (No tn odel.)
Be it knownthat I, JOHN KOEHLER, of New York city, in the Ycounty and` State of New `York, 4have inventeda new and 'Improved PricelCard Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
l My invention relates to a price card holder, or a holder adapted for the attachment of price cards to various articles, especially to cigar boxes, to indicate, for example, the name -of the cigars contained in the box and the price thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide a holder capable of receiving andretaining a card,` which may be applied in an expeditious manner, and capable like- Wise of being readily attached to the margin of a cigar box, clamping thc surface to which 'it is applied; and furthermore to so construct the holder that the ticket holding section will .have a hinged connection with the clamping section, enabling the ticket-holdi ng section4 to be drawn outwardl out ot' the way when cigars are to beremovcd from the box, or replaced therein, thus obv'iating the possibility of damaging the cigars.
The 'invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed ont in the claims.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
. Figure 1 is a perspect ivo view of a cigar box,
illustrating the holder applied to one sido thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box, illustrating a holder attached to the end. Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section through the box and through the holder, the holder being in the position shown in Fig. l. Fig. et is a detail perspective view of the holder, illustrating the ticket-carrying section as carried to an essentially vertical position upon the clamping section; and Fig. 5 y is a section through the box andthe holder, the holder be ing in the position shown in Fig. 2.
The holder may be ysaid to consist of a clamping section A and a ticket-carrying section B. The clamping section is 'preferably made Of one piece of metal of a spring character, being bent upon itself to, form abody 10, having practically-a hat lupper surface and two legs l1 and l2 extending downward from the body. These legs are adapted to receive between them the surface of a box C to which the holder is to be applied. Preferably one of the legsll is made shorter than the other in order that the device rnay be more quickly applied, and it is curved downward and inward from one side edge of the body, while the longer leg l2 in being formed is carried beneath the body in direction of the shorter leg, and then downward.
A pintlc 13, is-forlned in the top of the body nearer oneside than the other, and the said pintle is usually7 produced by cutting the metal of the body and bending it downward upon itself", as shown in Fig; .3; but the said pintle may be lformed in any manner known to the trade. I
The ticket-carrying section l, is given any contour that fancy may dictate. In the drawings it is shown as rectangular, and consists of a plato 14. having its edges turned up and over its Outer face, forming marginal flaps or retaining [langes l5; and at or near the oentral portion of one edge Ot' the said plate a knuckle 1G, is formed, through which the pintlc 153 of the clamping section extends, whereby. the plate has a hinge connection with the clamping section' and may rest upon the wider portion of the top of the said clamping section, in which position it will be inclined downward, as shown in Fig. i3; and the said ticket-carrying section may be carried to the vertical position, as shown in Fig. 4, or to an outwardly inclined position, as shown in Fig. 5; In either event the plate or ticket-carrying section will be `entirely removed from possible engagement with the hand of the operator when he is taking cigars, for example, from the box. x
When the device is attached to the side of a box, as shown in Figs. l and 3, the members of the clamp section are passed downward toan engagement with the inner and outer faces of the said side; and when the clamping section is in proper position upon the box the ticket-carrying section will face the/opposite side, having a downward inclination. If the box containing the goods is so placed thatone end faces the customer, the clamping section will be applied to the outer end of the box, as
shown in Figs. 2 and 5,n whchevent it is desirable that 'the plat or ticket-carrying section' should lhave an upward inclination. Therefore in this event spurs 17, are formed 5 upon the body portion -of the clamping section, against which the plate will rest, as illus- \trated particularly in Figs'. 4 and 5.- i
This device is exceedingly simple, durable and economic in its construction, and may be? O expeditiously and conveniently applied; and .prior to the operator placing vhishand in the box'to reinove a portion oii the contents, the plate or ticket-carrying section will be thrown y iupward either to a vertical position or to an outwardly-inclined position away from the interior off the box, thus preventing the possi-l bility. of cigars,l for example, being broken by Contact with' the plate, which often happens when cigars are removed from a box to which 'an inwardly-extending price card holder is rigidly and iinmovably secured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty 3 1. A card holder consisting otv a clamping [section having-a slotted head at its upper end provided with au integral pintle, and a ticket carrying section having an integral 'knuckle entering theyslot and turning on said pintle, substantially as described.
2. A price card holdei, the same comprising a clamping section, consisting of a head having a Epintle formed therein, and spring: clampa ing ylegs projecting downward from the head, adapted to clamp an object placed between them, andla ticket-carrying section, consist- .ing of a plate provided with a knuckle receiving the pintle ofthe clamping section, the knuckle being located at the back ot' one edge of the plate', t e front or outer face of 'the plate being provided with marginal clamping y flanges adapted to receive and retain a card, whereby the plate may rest'upon the body of the clamping section in a substantially ipiclinedposition, or be carried upward and supported in a substantially vertical position, as
I and/for thep'urpose svp'eciiied.-v
