COMBINED TABLE AND WRITING-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,357, dated February 19,1895.
Application filed October 26,1894;- Serial No. 527,041." (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR J. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Table and Writing-Desk; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a combined table and writing desk in which the lid forming the table top will be automatically raised to an inclined position when the drawer in table is pulled out, whereby said lid may be used as a desk-top for writing or drawing or for any other purpose desired where an inclined surface would be required.
The invention consists in a combined table and writing desk constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a combined table and writing desk constructed in accordance with my invention, the drawer being shown as pulled out and the hinged lid raised to an incline for use; Fig. 2, an interior plan view of the table on an enlarged scale showing the hinged lid thereof raised to an upright position and the drawer closed; Fig. 3, a sectional view taken on line 00 o: of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrow to show the mechanism for automatically raising the hinged lid, which is indicated as raised in dotted lines.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the table which is connected to a suitable support B of any desirable construction and either plain or ornamental as found most preferable. The tableA has'a hinged lid 0 to serve as a top to the table when in ahorizontal postion, and when on an incline as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to serve as a desk-top for writing or for other like purposes.
A sliding drawer D is contained within the table, which drawer may be divided into various compartments of any desirable size and shape for writing-paper and envelopes, pens,
pen-holders, postage stamps, eraser, an inkbottle, lead-pencil, 850., infact anything that may be required for writing or drawing purposes. As this arrangement of compartments will be left entirely with the manufacturer, any description of them in detail is deemed unnecessary.
A pivoted support E is connected to the table A and is adapted to be swung out in positionfor use to receive an ink-stand or bottle, as well as a rest for the pen-holder or for any other purpose that may be found desirable, or for supporting a lamp.
The lid 0 when in a horizontal position for use as a table-top, is locked or fastened in position by a very simple device. This device consists of the inclined hooks F with which engage suitable pins 0, extending out from the side of the drawer D, and when so engaged will securely fasten the lid down upon the table. When the drawer is pulled out the pins will disengage themselves from the hooks and the lid will be automatically raised to an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. considered the most preferable in attaining this result and which are also deemed the most simple, consist of suitable cams G H which are pivoted to the interior side of the table A and are connected together so that they will move simultaneously, by means of a lever I, which lever is pivoted at its ends to said cams. Upon the ends of the lever I are'shoulders b 0 upon which act the pushing device d projecting from the side of the drawer.
The lid 0 being down upon the table and fastened thereto as shown in full lines of Fig. 3, and the drawer closed, it is capable of being used as an ordinary table for supporting books thereon or as a card table or a table for general parlor use.
Should it be desired to use the table as a desk for either writing or drawing, the drawer is first pulled out which will disengage the pins a with the hooks F and release the lid 0. Now as the drawer is pulled out to a sufficient extent to bring the pushing device 01 against the shoulder b upon the lever I, and the drawer farther pulled out, the lever will be forced or moved in a direction toward the drawer and the lever being pivotally connected with the cams G H, said cams will be raised up The means employed which are against the lid and elevate it to the inclined position necessary for writing, as indicated in dotted lines of Fig. 3.
To bring the lid back to its normal position to serve as a table top, the drawer is pushed in and when the pushing device dis brought against the shoulder c at the opposite end of the lever, said lever will be forced back and carry with it the cams to the position shown in full lines, which will allow the lid to descend by gravity to a horizontal position and will be securely fastened bythe pins coming in contact with the hooks until the drawer is again drawn out.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A table provided with a hinged lid and a pivoted support adapted to be swung out in position for use, and a sliding drawer and cam actuating devices connected therewith to automatically raise and lower the lid by the movement of the drawer, and means for automatically locking the lid when the drawer is closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A table provided with a hinged lid and sliding drawer, pivoted cams and alever connecting them together and having shoulders atits ends, and a push device upon the drawer to act upon the shoulders whereby the lever and cams are operated to raise or lower the lid, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR J. GARLSON.
