WRITING-DESK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 602,326, dated April 12, 1898.

Application filed August 17, 1897. Serial No. 648,482. (No model.)

T0 at whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HEINRICH HEINE, of Hanover, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a new and useful- W'riting-Desk Adaptable for Use When Sitting or Standing, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention consists of a writing table or desk which can be used as advantageously when standing as when sittingupon a chair or stool of usual size. Separate writing-sun faces are used for these purposes, and both can be used independently one of another. The leaf which is used when sitting can be slid into the body of the desk or table, so that all the documents, &c., upon the same can easily be removed from sight.

This writing table or desk has also the advantage that all the drawers, with the exception of the middle one, when the table is in use are unlocked, but are simultaneously looked upon withdrawing the leaf which closes the entire table or desk.

On the accompanying drawings, representing this invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a table or desk, the half to the left of the center line showing the table in the closed position and the part to the right showing the same open and ready for use when sitting. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the table or desk. Fig. 3 is a section upon line was of Fig. 1, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent details of this invention.

In Figs. 1 and 2 the writing-surface used when standing isrepresented by A. This surface is of course arranged at a convenient height for this purpose. The space beneath this writing-surface A is closed by means of the leaf B. By unlocking this leaf and turning it upon the hinge by which it is attached to the plate or slide E it can be slid into the body of the desk upon the guides g. Above this leaf B when in its closed position the slide D is arranged slidably upon guides g on both sides. This slide D carries a writing leaf or surface 0, hinged to said slide at its front edge, and also carries a box of pigeonholes F, as shown. When this slide D is pulled so far out of the body of the desk that the top 0 of the pigeonhole-box F comes into contact with the projecting parts 19, then the leaf 0 is in a convenient position for Writing when sitting.

The guides of the slides D and E are represented on an enlarged scale in section in Fig. 4. A grooved metal strip 6 is let in each side of the slides and engages the projection which forms one member of a T-iron attached to the side of the desk. By this means the slide can be pulled in and out with the exercise of but slight force, and the guidance is very secure.

The writing-surface O is hinged at, h to the slide D, which latter is horizontal, and is maintained in an inclined position by means of the projections "6 upon two spring-catches, whose upper ends extend above the edge of the leaf 0 when the latter is raised, so as to enable the catches to be accessible under such conditions. The writing-surface G can be brought into a horizontal position by simultaneously pushing back the springs 70, by which means the leaf 0 falls onto the upper surface of the slide D, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5.

When it is no longer desiredto us he desk in a sitting position, then the l af 0 is slid into the body of the desk, andthe leaf B can then be pulled out and is turned upward and pressed against the projecting parts Z9 until the catch of the lock is caught. An arm of the lever Z is caught or rather depressed by the back end of the slide E, when the leaf B is opened and slid into the body of the desk. This lever is loosely attached to the body of the desk by means of the screw 3, so that it is capable of a certain amount of motion and can, when the'endl is depressed, raise the rod m, which is arranged in guides upon the inner surface of the outer sides of the desk or table, as shown in perspective on an enlarged scale in Fig. 6, from which figure it will also be seen that the projections n engage in corresponding recesses 0 in the drawers,and thus bolt the same.

The raising of the rod m by the depression of the end projecting upward of the lever Z simultaneously locks all the drawers with the exception of the middle one, so that when using the writing-surface O the drawers Z are unlocked. To again lock the drawers and indeed the whole table, the leaf B is drawn out and turned into the position shown on the left hand in Fig. 1, in which position it (the leaf) can be locked. The slide E being attached to the leaf B, itis upon the withdrawal of the latter drawn clear of the upwardly-projecting arm of the lever Z, and this allows the rod m to fall. Of course the drawers to be locked must be entirely closed.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to, secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a writing-desk, the combination with the body of the desk, of slide E running in guides thereon, leaf B hinged to slide E and adapted, when drawn out and raised, to close the front of the desk, and when let down and pushed in, to slide with slide E into the guides thereof, slide D sliding in guides above the slide E and provided with a writing-surface, drawers in the desk, a locking-bar m for said drawers and a leverl controlling said lockingbars and actuated by the slide E in its rearward movement, so as to unlock the drawers when said slide is pushed in.

2. In a writing-desk, the combination with the body of the desk, of. slide E running in guides therein, leaf B hinged to slide E and adapted when drawn out and raised to close the front of the desk, slide D sliding in guidesabove slide E, a leaf 0 hinged to slide D and the body of the desk, having at its top an inclined surface for writing when standing, of a slide E, running in guides below said surface, a leaf B hinged to slide E, and adapted when raised, to close the front of the desk, and when depressed to be pushed back with slide E in the guides thereof, a slide D, mounted to slide above slide E, and a leaf 0 hinged to slide D and forming a writing-surface for use When sitting.
