UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFrcn.
LARS J. ANDERSON, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
BASE FOR FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 533,155, dated January 29, 1895. Application filed hiarch 19 1894. Serial No. 504,329. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LABS J. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a base for furniture, in which the article of furniture is mounted upon a stationary base, and having a pivotal connection with a pivoted extension in order that it may be turned about to bring the reverse face of the article of furniture to view.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a plan view of my improvements showing the parts in their closed position. Fig. 2, is a plan view showing the platform and pivotal extension at one quarter. Fig. 3, is an under face view of the platform. Fig. 4, is a plan view of the stationary base in which the piv- .oted extension is shown extended in dotted lines. Fig. 5, is an isometrical.representation of the base in which the extension has been removed. Fig. 6, is an isometrical representa tion of the under face of the pivoted extension.
The stationary base 1, is of rectangular form and has its upper face provided with a recess 2, of irregular shape and within this recess is located a curved track 3, and a portion of the wall 4, of the recess is provided with an undercut 5, and on the upper face of the recess is located a roller 6, near the front face of the stationary base, and to the rear face of the stationary base are secured perforated blocks 7, and a curved bar 8, is connected to the upper face of the stationary base and overlies a portion of the recess.
An extension 9, is in outline form the same as the recessed portion of the base, and has a pivotal connection with the base by the pin 10, extending through the bar 11, which has a connection with the extension, its free end carrying a roller 12, which runs in the undercut 5, of the wall 4, of the recess.
To the under face of the extension is secured a roller 13, which runs upon the curved track 3, secured to the stationary base, and also has a curved flat track 14, secured to its under face and runs upon the roller 6, secured to the base, this extension having a pivotal con nection with the base, its inner end' guided by the roller 12, running in the undercut 5, and its outer end supported by the tracks 3 and 14, and rollers 6, and 13. When this extension is in its closed position the outer surface of the stationary base will be filled in.
In the upper face of the extension is formed a perforation 15, and also has a circle of iron -l6, located around the pivot, and is laid in flush with the upperface of the extension. The extension when in its closed position will pass under the bar 8, extending across the recessed portion of the stationary base.
The platform 17, upon which is located the article of furniture is of suitable size to prop erly hold the article of furniture, its center provided with a stud 18, which enters the per foration 15, in the upper face of the extension, and in the under face of the platform are located four rollers 19, which rest upon the circle 16, when the platform is placed upon the extension, the pivot holding the rollers upon the circle.
To the upper face of the stationary base and to the blocks 7 are pivoted links 20 and 21, and to the free end of each link is pivoted a bar 22, having an extension 23, which has a pivotal connection at its free end with the under face of the platform 17, thereby forming a linked connection between the platform and stationary base.
When the pivoted extension is in its closed position within the stationary base, and the platform located thereupon and turned to overlie the base, the platform may be turned face about by taking hold of the corner 24, and move it outward. The links 20 and 21, in their connection with the bar 22, will hold the pivot point of the arm 23, with the p1atform the required distance from the rear face of the stationary base in order that the platform may be turned about, and during this movement of the platform its pivotal connection with the pivoted extension will cause the extension to move upon its pivot to the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 4, and in solid lines Fig. 2, the extension forming a support for the platform as the center of the platform in turning about moves beyond the face of Ioo he stationary base, and the continued movement of the platform through its linked connection with the base and pivotal connection with the extension will cause the extension to retract to its closed position.
The bar 8, supports the linked connection between the platform and stationary base preventing the links from falling within the recessed portion of the base.
It will be noticed that a portion of the circle 16, extends under the bar 8, when the extension is in its closed position, but when this position of the extension has been reached the rollers 19, will rest upon the circle in front of "the bar and as the extension moves on its pivot the circle will be brought clear of the bar in order that the rollers may move uponits entire surface if necessary in turning the platform about.
This construction of base is especially adapted for a combination folding bed.
I do not claim broadly a stationary base, an extensible section having a pivotal connection with the base, and a platform supported by the extension and having a connection with the base; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A base for furniture consisting, of a stationary base, an extensible section having a pivotal connection with the base, a curved undercut portion of the base, a projection extending from the section supporting a roller upon its free end which is located Within the undercut.
2. A base for furniture consisting of a stationary base, an extensible section having a pivotal connection with the base, a platform supported by the extension having a link con' nection with the base and a support for the link connection.
3. A base for furniture consisting of a stationary base having a recessed upper face, a curved track located in the recessed portion, a roller secured within the recessed portion and located near the front of the base, an extcnsible section located within the recessed portion and having a pivotal connection with the base, a curved track and roller secured to the under face of the extension engaging the'curved track and roller of the base a platform having a pivotal connection with the extension and a connection with the base.
4. A base for furniture consisting of a stationary base, an extensible section having a pivotal connection with the base, a platform supported by the extension and having a linked connection with the base, through the medium of two like links pivotally connected with the base, and a bar pivotally connected to the ends of the links and having a pivotal connection with the platform.
