BASE FOR FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561 ,7'45, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed May 6, 1893. Serial No. 473,204. (No model.)
To all whom it may con-corn:
Be itknown that I,\VILLIAM F. WooDRUrF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Furniture, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
This invention relates to that class of bases for furniture in which the article of furniture has a pivotal connection with the base and by its oscillatory movement a support is moved out in position to receive it in order that it maybe revolved to bring the bed to the front.

Fig. 2 is an isometrioal representation of the base in which the movable supports are in their extended position. Fig. 2 is a fragmental view of the parts 10 and 11. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the operative parts in dotted lines and in their closed position. Fig. 4. is also a plan view in which the movable supports are in their extended position and receive the platform. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the mechanism for operating the movable supports.
The base proper, 1, is of rectangular form, its front edge provided with two quadrantshaped openings 2 and a transverse central guideway 4, its rear edge having a groove 3, the ends of which are inclined. XVithin the quadrantshaped openings 2 are located two quadrant-supports 5, having a pivotal connection with the base proper at 6, and from their face fall depending legs 7, to the under side of which are secured rollers or casters 8. 'When the quadrants are in their closed positions, their front faces lie flush with the front of the base, the legs entering recesses 9. From the inner corner of the quadrants project studs 10, forming stops to the outward movement of the quadrants and during the movement of the quadrants traveling under the lower edge 11 of the curved side of the quadrant-shaped openings. The mechanism for operating the quadrants consists of a guide 12, seated in the guideway 4c and having a lengthwise slot 13, and cleats 14, secured to the base 1, hold the guide in the guideway.
To this guide are pivoted arms 15, which also have a pivotal connection with the quadrants 5. To the under side of the guide 12 is pivoted a latch 16. (Shown at Figs. 5 and 6.)
From the center of the under side of the platform 17 projects a pin 18, and to the under side of this platform is pivoted a link 19, having a roller 20 pivoted to its free end. The pin 18 is placed in the slot 13 of the guide 12, and the roller 20 is placed in groove 3 in the upper face of the base 1.
When the parts are in the position shown at Figs. 1 and 3, the pin 18 will be in the extreme inner end of the slot 13 and the latch 16 will surround its outer edge, as shown at Fig. 5.
If the platform be moved by taking hold of the end 21, the link 19 will act as its fulcrum, and the pin 18 pressing against the latch 16 and the free end of the latch against the inn er face of the guideway will cause the guide to move outward, and owing to its linked connection with the quadrants will move them on their pivots from the position shown at Figs. 1 and 3 to that shown at Figs. 2 and -i-, and when this position has been reached the free end of the latch will have entered the notch 22, formed in the base, and will occupy the position shown at Fig. 6, allowing the pin to move in the slot 13 without affecting the further movement or the quadrants. The platform is moved until the roller 20 comes in contact with the opposite end of the slot 3, and at this point the pin 18 will have reached the inner end of the slot 13 and the further movement of the platform will cause the guide to move inward,moving the quadrants on their pivots, drawing them inward into their closed position, and this movement will cause the latch to close around the pin, as shown at Fig. 5, in position to be again operated upon by the pin, and this is accomplished by the walls of the notch.
In depressions 23, formed in the upper face of the base 1, are located casters 2i, placed at proper intervals over its surface, and the quadrants are each provided with a similar caster 25.
The casters in the base are slightly higher than those in the quadrants, in order that weight of the article of furniture located upon the platform will be borne by the base.
It will be noticed that the under side 11 of be noticed that the quadrant-supports are in their extended position before any of the weight of the platform is transferred thereto and that the weight is whollyremoved therefrom before they are moved totheir closed position, which enables the quadrants to be operated withthe least possible power.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a stationary base,- a pivoted platform or article of f urniture,a movable support for and independent of the platform or article, anda connection between the platform or article and support whereby the support may be extended before the weight of the platform or article is transferred thereto, and retracted after the weight of the platform or article has been removed therefrom.
2. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform orarticle of furniture located over the base, a movable support for the platform or article adapted to be extended before the weight of the platformor article is transferred thereto and, retracted after the weight of the platform or article has been removed therefrom, and means for automatically extending and retracting the support.
, 3. The combination ofa stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture, two pivoted quadrant-shaped supports for the platform or article, and connections between the platform or article and supports whereby the supports are extended and retracted by the movement of the platform or article.

The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture, two pivoted quadrant-shaped supports therefor, a connection between the platform or article and supports, whereby the supports are extended and retracted by the movement of the platform or article, and rollers carried by the base and movable supports, extending above their upper surfaces.
5. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture, a movable support for the platform or article when in its extended position, a link connection between the platform or article and support, and a connection between the platform or article and base.
6. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article, a movable support for the platform or article when in its extended position, a guideway a sliding guide located in the guideway, the pivot of the platform located in the guide, a latch having a pivotal connection with the guide, the side of the guide-support cut away allowing the latch pivoted to the platform having a roller trav cling in the groove of the base.
8. The combination of a stationary base, a
pivoted platform or article of furniture located over the base, a movable support for the platform or article adapted to be extended before the weight of the platform or article is transferred thereto and retracted after the weight of the platform or article has been removed therefrom, and means for automatically extending the support.
9. The combination of a'stationary base, a

10. The combination of a stationary base, having a guideway extending in its lengthwise direction and a guideway extending transverse to its length, a platform or article of furniture having a pivot-pin engaging the transverse guideway and a connection with the lengthwise guideway, and a movable support when in its extended position adapted to support the platform or article.
11. The combination of a stationary base provided with a series of recesses in its upper face, caster-wheels located therein a pivoted p atform or article of furniture when in its closed position resting upon the caster-wheels, a movable support for the platform or article adapted to be extended before the weight of the platform or article is transferred thereto, and retracted after the weight of the platform or article has been removed therefrom and supporting caster-wheels with which the platform engages in turning.
12. The combination of a stationary base, a guideway extending in its lengthwise direction, a guideway extending transverse to its length, a series of recesses formed in the base, caster-wheels located in the recesses, a platform or article of furniture provided with a depending pivot moving in the transverse guideway, the platform or article having a connection with the lengthwise guideway, a movable support for the platform or article caster-wheels supported thereby, the support when in its extended position adapted to receive the platform or article upon the casterwheels.

The combination consisting ofastationary base, a guideway extending in its lengthwise direction, a movable guideway extending transverse to its length, a series of recesses formed in the base, caster-wheels lo cated in the recesses, a platform or article of furniture provided with a depending pivot moving in the transverse guideway, the platform or article having a connection with the lengthwise guideway, a movable support for the platform or article, caster-wheels supported thereby, the support when in its extended position adapted to receive the platform or article upon the caster-wheels.
ii. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture located over the base, a movable support for the platform or article adapted to be extended before the weight of the platform or article is transferred thereto and retracted after the weight of the platform or article has been removed therefrom, and means for automatically retracting the support.
15. The combination of a stationary base, an extensible section having a pivotal connection with the base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture located over the base having a connection therewith, and supported by the extension when extended.
16. The combination of a stationary base having a longitudinal guideway, and a transverse guideway a movable section located in the transverse guideway having an elongated slot, of a platform or. article of furniture engaging the longitudinal guideway, and provided with a central pivot projecting into the slot of the movable section of the base.
17. The combination with a stationary base provided with a lengthwise guideway, a platform or article of furniture adapted to be rotated upon a pivot, and having a bodily forward movement a frame pivoted upon the base and in such a manner as to swing forwardly, a pivot-pin for said platform or artiole made movable with the platform or article, and a guide-pin having a connection with the bottom of the platform or article for engaging the lengthwise guideway.
18. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture sup ported bythe base, and a pivoted support having a connection with the base and adapted to support the platform or article when moved outward from the base.
19. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture, a movable support for the platform when in its extended position, a transverse guideway, the pivot of the platform or article located in the guideway and movable therein, a movable portion engaging the pivotal pin of the platform, on turning the platform or article, the support will be moved out.
20. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture located over the base and supported thereby when in its normal position, and a movable support therefor having a connection with the base to which movement is imparted by the platform or article before the weight of the platform or article is transferred thereto.
21. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture supported by the base, a connection between the platform or article and base, a movable support having a connection with the base, a movable transverse guideway and a pin depend; ing from the under face of the platform or article moving in the guideway.
22. The combination of a stationary base, a platform or article of furniture supported by the base, of means connecting the base and platform whereby a rotary movement is imparted to the platform or article, and a support having a connection with the base and adapted to support the platform or article when moved outward from the base, the base provided with an inclined guideway a projection extending from the support movable in contact with the under face of the guideway so that the free end of the support will clear the floor in its movements.
23. The combination of a stationary base a pivoted platform or article of furniture, a pivoted support having a connection with the base and adapted to support the platform or article when moved outward from the base, the pivoted support located within a recess formed in the upper face of the base.
24:. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture, a connection between the platform or article and base, the base having a transverse guideway, a pivot-pin depending from the under face of the platform or article moving in the guideway, a movable support adapted to support a portion of the weight of the platform or article in turning, and a movable part located in the path of the pivot-piu controlling the move ment of the support.
25. The combination of a stationary base, a pivoted platform or article of furniture, a connection between the platform or article and base, the base having a transverse guideway, a pivot-pin depending from the under face of the platform or article moving in the guideway, a movable support adapted to support a portion of theweight of the platform or article in turning, and a movable part located in the path of the pivot-pin which must be moved out of the path of the pivot-pin before the platform or article can complete its turning movement.
