Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. MILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Park and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Turners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and

This invention relates to an improved nail turner, and it has for its object, to provide a turner for nails that will at all times present the points of the nails downward, so as to be easily grasped by the mechanic using them.

My device is particularly adapted for use of plasterers. In this class of work, it has heretofore been customary and necessary, inorder to secure the latter quickly and easily, to place a certain number of nails in the mouth with the points extending out, so that they could be easily held between the d ngers. This of course is a very cumbersome and in fact, slow method, and to overcome these objections, I provide my present invention.

My invention is extremely simple in construction and can be manufacturedat a comparatively small cost.

The numeral 1, indicates the nail turner, which is approximately semicircular in cross section; 2, the bottom thereof,which is slightly curved upwardly, the object of which will be hereinafter explained. The bottom is secured to end pieces 3 and 4, by screws 5. A

curved front piece 6, is also secured to the end pieces 3 and 4, likewise a rear curved piece 7, extending upwardly a short distance from the end pieces 3 and 4.

The front and rear pieces of the turner stop a short distance from the bottom portion 2,

thus forming two slots 8 and 9, through which the points of the nails protrude when the device is in operation. The end piece 4, is slightly out out as at 10, to permit the heads of the nails-to freely pass out of the slots.

To retain the hails from falling out of the slots, without. any exertion being applied thereto, I secure to the end piece 4, and projecting down in the path of the slots 8 and 9, bristles or small brushes 11, which are adjusted up and down by screws 12.

In the upwardly projecting portion of the rear piece I provide two slots 13, through which is passed a belt or strap 14, which is passed around the waist of the mechanic using the turner. This strap is secured to the rear plate as at 15. Looped at one end 16 to the strap'14, and loopedat the other end by means of an adjustable buckle and loop 17 is a strap 18. This strap passes up and around the users shoulders.

The operation of my device is as follows: Nails are promiscuously put into the receptacle and the sides being curved or inclined in the direction of the slots, and likewise the bottom being curved from the center toward the slots the nails reaching the bottom first will fall through the slots and be supported by the heads which will rest on the edges 21. Thus the operator can grasp nails between his thumb and fore finger, and then slides them along the slot and out through the cut out portion 10 of the end piece 4, the brush offering no resistance when being pulled out. A plasterer can now lath much faster than heretofore, as by the old method the nails had to be placed in the month one by one.

It will be seen that my device is extremely simple in construction and effective in operation, as will be readily understood by those the screws are adjusted so as to make the space larger for the heads.

Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a nail turner the combination of the semi-circular receptacle, having curved sides and a curved bottom, slots formed between said front, rear and bottom pieces, substanthem and brushes or bristles at the ends of the same, substantially as described.

2. In a nail turner, the combination of two end pieces 3 and 4, one of which has a cutout portion 10, bristles or brushes secured to one end piece 4, front and rear curved pieces, a curved bottom piece and slots formed between tially as described. IO
