Application September 17, 1945, Serial No. 616,815
2- Claims. 1
My invention relates to an improvement in nail dispenser devices. This device is particularly useful to workers doing shingleing or lathing and similar jobs. Heretofore it has been the practice of men doing such work as above mentioned to put the nails in their mouth, from where they can fastly feed the nails, one or two or three at a time to their hand, whereupon the nails can be quickly placed in position for nailing the shingle or lath in place, While this has been the practice, it is not desirable or pleasant as the nails do not have a good taste, and there is always more or less dirt with the nails and'the dirt gets into the mouth and on the face of the workman which, of course, is not desirable.
In view of the foregoing described situation, I have provided my improved nail dispenser device which is designed to dispense the nails without the bad features above mentioned.
A further object of my invention is to provide a nail dispenser device that will hold a goodsnpply of nails so that the dispenser device will not have to be frequently refilled with nails as the workman uses the nails;
A stilt, further object is to provide a device of the kind mentioned that will hold a few of the nails by the heads of the nails with the pointed ends and shafts of the nails hanging from the bottom of the dispenser so that the nails may be moved along the bottom of the dispenser and removed from the dispenser at one end thereof.
A still further object is to provide a device of the kind mentioned in which the suspended nails, as above mentioned, are held in the dispenser by a spring means until the nails are removed from the dispenser against the pressure of the spring.
A still further object is to provide a nail dispenser of the kind described that may be attached to the body of the workman in such a position that the nails are easily accessible to the workman. These and other objects will be more fully explained as this description progresses.
Now referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar numerals of reference designate the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings; Fig. l is a perspective view of the nail dispenser device and showing the device attached to the body of a workman.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the nail dispenser 2. device, the view being taken from above the device to show the interior thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the dispensing end of the device, the retainer spring being removed therefrom to show the dispenser opening of the device.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the dispensing end of the device and illustrating how the nails are removed from the dispenser.
In the drawings the nail holder and dispenser device is shown as having a substantially V- shaped hopper having a front wall 5, a rear wall'li', endwalls l and 8. and alongitudinally disposed rod iZa, positioned between the ends I and 8. The top edge 50. of the front wall 5 is turned rearwardly to form an inwardly extending lip 5a which acts as a battle to keep the nails from readily falling or spilling out. of the container in case the device is tipped forwardly. The lip 5a also serves as a stiifening element for the top edge of the front .wall' 5 of the device.
The bottom edges of the walls 5 and 6 are spaced apart thereby leaving a slot. 9that is Wide enough that the shaft ill-of the nails will pass therethrough but the heads Hia of the nails will not pass therethrough, therefore the nails H1-. Illa will be suspended by the heads lfla and the shafts ill will be exposed and will hang from the bottom of the container.
In the end 8 of the container and at the bottom thereof is an opening l I that is centered over the end of the slot 9 so that the nails may be moved along the slot 9 and removed from the container by passing the heads Illa of the nails through the opening I I.
A leaf spring I2 is positioned over the opening i I and lays flat against the outside surface of the end wall 8' to close the opening I l. Adjacent end of the slot 9, the upper end of the leaf spring I2 is rigidly attached, either riveted, soldered or welded, to the end wall 8 and the lower end of the leaf spring I2 is springably movable from the end of the slot 9 and thereby opening the lower ends of the opening I! so that the nail heads Illa may be passed therethrough to remove the nails IUI 0a from the container.
A rod lZa is centrally and longitudinally positioned in the container and directly above the slot 9 and the ends of the rod l2 are rigidly attached to the end walls I and 8 of the container.
The upper portion of the rear wall 6 of the container extends well above the top edge of the front wall 5 and end walls I and 8. In the upper corners of the rear wall are slots l3 and i l, and in the central side edges of the rear Wall 6 and just above the top edge of the end walls I and 8 are slots [5 and (6.
One end of a strap IT is passed through the slot [3 and folded against itself and riveted at 3. The other end of the strap I1 is provided with a buckle IS in which is adjustably held one end of a second strap 20. The other end of the strap 20 is passed through the slot 14 and folded against itself and riveted at 2!. Similarly, one end of a second strap 22 is passed through the slot l5 and folded against itself and riveted the same as the strap H.
The other end of the strap 22 is provided with a buckle 23 in which is adjustably held one end of another strap 24. The other end of the strap 24 is passed through the slot [6 and folded against itself and riveted as at 25.
The use and operation of the device is as follows: The strap ll'2ll is placed around the neck of the workman and adjusted by the use of the buckle l9 and strap end 20 to support the device at the most comfortable and convenient height for use by the workman. Then the strap 22 is passed around the body of the workman and the end of the strap 24 is fastened in the buckle 23 1 to hold the dispenser device against the body of the workman. This having been done, the container is supplied with nails, and as the nails are put in the container, the first ones will fall through the slot 9 and be caught by the heads Illa by the lower edges of the front and back walls 5 and 6. Now by moving the nails ll3l0a along in the slot 9 until the head Illa of the nail engages the lower end of the leaf spring I2, the lower end of the leaf spring 12 will be sprung outwardly as shown in Fig. 4 and the nail Ill-Illa. will be released from the container, whereupon the nail may be used.
As the nails are removed from the container as above described and the pile of nails remaining in the container settles down because of the nails being removed therefrom, the nails will fall around the rod [211 which will have a tendency to position the nails so they will more readily align themselves with the slot 9 to be received therein.
4 Such modifications of my invention may be employed as lie within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and intention of the invention. Now having fully shown and described my invention, what I claim 1. In a nail container and dispenser device of the kind described; the combination of a substantially V-shaped container having side walls and walls therefor at the ends thereof, a slot formed between the said side walls of the container, one of the end walls having a slot therein that is wider than, and spans the end of the first said slot, and spring means attached to the end wall above the slot therein and covering the slot therein, one of the walls forming the V being higher than the other and having means therein for holding attachments for the support of the container, the upper edge of the other wall of the V being turned inwardly to form a lip to prevent the spilling of nails from the container.
2. In a nail container and dispenser device of the kind described; the combination of a substantially V-shaped container having side walls and walls therefor at the ends thereof, a slot formed between the said side walls of the container, one of the end walls having a slot therein that is wider than, and spans the end of the first said slot, and spring means attached to the end wall above the slot therein and covering the slot therein, one of the walls forming the V being higher than the other and having means therein for holding attachments for the support of the container, the upper edge of the other wall of the V being turned inwardly to form a lip to prevent the spilling of nails from the container, and means in said container for diverting the sharp ends of the nails downwardly to be received in the first said slot, said means being a bar, said bar being positioned above the first said slot and being supported by the end Walls of the container.
