JAMES H. llOlVARD AND YVOODFORD .A. SCOGGAN, OF OREGON CITY, OREGON.
CUTTER-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 533,466, dated February 5,1 895. Application filed April 17, 1894- Serial No. 507,835. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES H. HOWARD and WooDFoRD A. SCOGGAN, both of Oregon City, in the county of Glackamasand State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Cutter-Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in that class of devices which are used in cutting hair from human heads; and the object of our invention is to produce a guide which, in connection with a cutter, enables the hair to be cut in a very even manner, which also enables the hair to be out very rapidly, which is particularly adapted for usein cutting hair pompadour; which, however, may be used for cutting hair in any desired style, which may be used to great advantage in connection with the ordinary clippers, and which also may be used in connection with any other suitable cutter.
To these ends our invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved device as applied to the head. Fig. 2 is a broken plan view of the guide. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the guide; and Fig. at is a front end view of the guide.
Theguide is provided with a suitable frame 10, the sides of which converge at the rear ends 11 so as to form a shank to enter the handle 12. The frame is curved upward near the center to enable it to be used conveniently above the head and is curved downward in front, as shown at 13, its forward ends terminating in horizontal bends 14: which receive the cross bolt 15 which is curved upward in the center and serves as a head-rest, this bolt having milled nuts 16 at the ends to enable it to be clamped to the guide plates 17 so as to hold them at any desired angle.
The plates 17 are arranged parallel with each other and are slotted longitudinally to receive the fastening bolt 19 which extends through them, and also through the head 20 of the comb plate, which comprises the parallel teeth 22 and the side bars 21 which are parallel with the teeth and are angular in cross section, see Fig. 2, so that they may act as guides for a clipper which may be run over the comb plate.
The bolt 19 which extends through the head 20 has at one end a head 23 to bear against one of the plates 17, and at the other it is provided with a milled nut 24 to bear against the opposite plate, and thus, by tightening the nut, the plates 17 maybe jammed against the head 20 so as to hold the head in place and maintain the comb plate at any desired angle. ltwill be seen that the plates l7'may be held at any desired angle to the frame by means of the bolt and its nuts, and it will be also observed that the comb plate may be fixed at anydesired angle to the plates 17, and consequently the comb plate may be easily adjusted so as to guide the cutter and cut the hair at any necessary length.
In using the guide, the head of the comb plate is adjusted so that it will be the desired distance above the rest or bolt 15, the comb plate is adjusted so as to extend rearward at the desired angle from the plates 17, and the hair is brushed up, after which the comb plate is run through it so that the hair sticks up through the comb plate and the cutter is then run over the plate so as to sever that part of the hair which protrudes through the plate.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cutter guide comprising an open frame having a downward extension or bearing at its forward end to rest on the head and a comb plate within the said frame and having its back mounted adjustably in bearings above said extension, substantially as described.
2. A cutter guide, comprising asupporting 5 frame, slotted side plates mounted on the frame, and a comb plate mounted in the slotted slide plates and provided with means for fastening it, substantially as described.
3. A cutter guide, comprising a curved through the slots in the side plates, substan-' tially as described.
4. A cutter guide, comprising a handled frame having opposite parallel curved members, slotted side plates adjustably secured 10 between the sides of the frame, a comb plate held between the sides of the frame and between the slotted side plates, and afastening bolt extending through the comb plate and through the side plates, substantially as described.
