Description

S. P. KURZMAN.
' CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 6, .1910.

il ifinesses:
UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
SEYMOUR P. KURZMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR P. KURZ- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to cutting implements of the pli'er type, and has for its object to provide a cutting instrument of a simple and inexpensive construction which is adapted to sever a coupon from a bond with one stroke of the implement.
I attain the object of my invention by means of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved cutting implement; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the implement showing a coupon inserted in the jaws; Fig. 3 is an end view of the implement; and Fig. at is an elevation of one of the gages shown in Fig. 2.
The implement comprises a pair of crossed handle levers (11) each of which is pivotally fastened at its forward end to the rear portion (7) of one of the jaws (ii-13) by means of a screw or rivet (2), and pivotally united at (8) by a rivet or screw extend ing through the handles. The rear end of each jaw is provided with a slot (4) which passes over a pin (5) carried in the handle and is guided thereby to maintain the jaws in parallelism as the handles are pressed or released. The jaws each comprise a rectangular open frame portion (6) and an extended rear portion (7).
To sever a coupon from a bond it is necessary to make a rectangular cut, the legs of which extend in directions parallel to the defining edges of the coupon. To this end I provide each jaw (AB) with a rightangled vertical cutter (8) secured by the screws or other suitable fastening means to the frame portion (6) of said jaw, along the inner surface of the front and side member thereof. The cutters carried on the upper and lower jaws are slightly offset Specification of Letters Patent.

from each other and have their cutting edges (9) beveled in opposite directions so as to impart a shearing action to them as the jaws are closed. I prefer to construct each cutter of two separate blades arranged at right angles and having their cutting edges inclined lengthwise toward the junction of the blades, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In order to regulate the length of the cut, as occasioned by different sized coupons, I provide one of the jawspreferably the lower one (B)--with a longitudinal and a transverse gage (10). These gages are secured in a vertical position against the inner face of the cutter, on either side of the angle thereof, and they are adjustable lengthwise by means of a set screw (11) passing through a slot (12) in the lug portion (13) of the gage. By moving the gage away from or toward the angle of the cutter, the length of the cut may be increased or diminished at will.
While my implement is particularly adapted to cutting coupons from bonds, it is obvious that it may be used for other purposes where a rectangular cut is desired. Furthermore, it will be understood that the construction and arrangement of the various parts may be modified from the described preferred form of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
I claim:
A coupon cutter, comprising two opposed frame-like jaws, each carrying a right-angled cutter, a pair of adjustable gages for limiting the length of the cut, secured to the lower along the inner surface of the cuttor and projecting slightly above its cutting edges, and handle levers pivoted together and to the jaws, adapted to move said jaws parallel to each other substantially as described.
Signed at New York in the county and State of New York, this 1st day of July, 1910.
SEYMOUR P. KURZM AN.
