vSASH FASTENER.
No. 532,062. Patented Jan. 8, 1895.
" WiinEsseS 94. JTZUBnTOrT 7 zm www NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. I-IINKLE, or EMPORIUM, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,062, dated January 8, 1895.
Application filed April 10, 1 8 94.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HINKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Emporium, in the county of Cameron and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to lock the lower sash of a window so that the top sash may be held open to a greater or less degree for ventilation and the admission of cool air in hot weather.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view, showing my invention applied; Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the locking mechanism, and Fig. 3 a detail view of the catch plates.
In the drawings, A represents the plate to which are pivoted the detents B O, to the latter of which is pivoted a brace pawlD working in notches or ratchet teeth on the back of detent B. The plate A is attached by screws or otherwise to the top of the lower sash, while the plates E with one or more holes 6 are attached to the upper sash and to the Serial No. 507,007. (No model.)
window frame as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The detent 0 works in the plate on the window frame so as to hold the lower sash securely locked down, while the detent B works in either of the plates on the upper sash accordingly as it may be let down more or less.
In order that the lock of the upper sash, at Whatever point of adjustment it maybe placed, shall be secure and not liable to let it fall, the brace-pawl D is used so as to keep the detents firmly'held in the holes of the plates E. I
Having thus described all that is necessary to afull understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A sash fastener consisting of the plate A,
detents 13 O pivoted thereto, brace-pawl D pivoted at right angles to the pawl 0r detent O, and the catch plates E with holes e, the said plates being provided with screw holes for attachment to the'sashes and window frame substantially as and for the purpose set forth;
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. HINKLE.
