UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
THOMAS Q. HALL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
FOLDING DIVAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 531,843, dated January 1, 1895.
Application fled June 14, 1894. Serial No. 514,502. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Q. HALL, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Divans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relateslto folding divans, and the object of the invention is to produce a divan of this character composed of three sections; a permanent section and two hinged sections, which, when the divan is unfolded, open forwardly or outwardly from the permanent section.
A further object of the invention is to produce a folding divan of ornamental appearance which is simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive of construction.
With these objects in View, the invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which-'- Figure 1. is a perspective view of a divan framework in its unfolded or open position. Fig. 2. is a perspective view of the same in its folded or closed position. Fig. 3. is a vertical sectional view of one end of the divan when in its closed position.
In the said drawings, a rectangular framework is composed of the end-boards 1, and the side- bars 2 and 3, and this rectangular framework is supported upon the legs 4, which are mounted upon caster-rollers 5, in the ordinary manner, and projecting vertically from the upper side of the side-bar 2,-is the frame 6, of the divan; said frame forming the back frame of the divan when in its folded or closed position, and the head-board or frame of said divan when in its opened or unfolded position. Projecting inward from the end-boards 1, at the lower margins thereof, are the bars 7, which connect the ends of the side- bars 2 and 3, and form a support for the slats. (Not shown.)
A rectangular frame comprises the end-bars 8, and the sidebars 9 and 1Q, and the side-bar 9 rests, when the divan is unfolded, upon the side-bar 3 of the frame previously described.
The end-bars Sare secured rigidlyin any suitable manner to the end-boards l1', which are hinged at their inner ends and upper margins at w12, to the outer or forward ends and upper margins of the Aend-boards l, and depending from the outer ends of the end-boards 11, are the bars 13, which rest, when the divan is unfolded, upon the door, and form one of the supporting legs of the divan, and these bars 13 are connected to the end-boards 11 by the barslll, which form the arm-rests when the divan is in its folded or closed position.
A third rectangular frame comprises the end-bars 15, and the side-bars 16 and 17 connecting said end-bars at their opposite ends, and these end-bars 15 at their inner ends are hinged at 18 to the outer or forward ends of the end-bars 8, in such manner when folded that the side-bar 16 bears against the front side of the adjacent side-bar 10. The opposite side-bar 17 is recessed in its outer side at 19, and pivotally mounted upon said side-bar are the legs 20, which when the divan is unfolded depend vertically, and resting upon the ioor, support the outer or forward end of the frame j ust described.
When it is desired to convert this open divan into a closed divan, the legs 2O are pivotally operated until they occupy snugly the recesses 19 in the bar 17. The outermost framework is then pivotally operated upon its hinges 18, and folded back until the endbars-15 rest upon the end-bars 8 of the second frame. The bars 13, are now grasped and the two outermost frames are moved upwardly upon the hinge-points 12, until the end-boards 11 rest upon the end-boards 1, and the framework assumes the form illustrated in Fig. 2. It will be readily seen that the employment of a flexible mattress will allow this folding operation to take place, and that when the divan is entirely folded the edge of the mattress and bedclothes will project into the space between the side-bar 3 and the side-bar 17, and will support the legs 2O in their folded or inoperative position.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have produced a folding divan composed of three sections, which does not necessitate the movement of the divan when it is desired to open or unfold the same for the night, as is the case with divans employ- IOO ing a permanent inner section and two sections hinged thereto to open in opposite directions. Furthermore, it will be apparent that I have produced a folding divan which may be easily and expeditiously operated, and which is simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive of construction, and at the same time of ornamental appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- ,A
A folding divan, comprising a permanent section, consisting of a Vertical back-frame, and a horizontal frame, comprising end-bars 1, and side- bars 2 and 3 mounted upon legs 4; a second section, comprising end-bars 8 and side-bars 9 and 10, and comprising also the end-boards 11, corresponding in length and secured to and projecting above the outer margin of said end-bars 8, the Vertical bars 18, projecting rigidly from one end of said end-boards and forming, When the device is cessed at 19, legs 2O pivoted to the Side-bar 17, and adapted to engage the recesses 19, and hinges 18, connecting the adjacent ends of the end-bars 8 and 15, of the second or middle and the third or outer section, respectively, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in l presence of two Witnesses.
