Description
ATES i PATENT Prion.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,361, dated December 25, 1894.
i lApplication filed August 23, 1894. Serial No. 521,125. (No model.)
To all whom, Yif may concern: .v
Beit known that I, CHARLES H, CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huron,
- in the county of Beadle and State of South u, ro
Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 4which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to devices for holding or maintaining a door open in any desired position and among theobjects in View is to provide an extremelysimple, inexpensive, durable and efficient device of the describedcharacter adapted for the purpose mentioned, saiddevice being adapted also to be readily and quickly adjusted to suit the distance of the door fromthe floor.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the described character which is adapted to be conveniently operated by the foot to cause the same to lock or release the door when desired, and with the above and other objects in view all of which will be presently apparent my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts constituting my improved device, all as presently fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointedout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device showing the same in its non-operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device in its operative or locking position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View; Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the gage plate plate washer.
Fig. 5 is a rear side view of the device; Fig. 6, a side view of the angle locking lever of the device. p
In carrying out my invention I provide a lever 1, which is shaped or bent at an angle of about one hundred and thirty-five degrees and comprising the longer or heavier arm 3, and the shorter or lighter arm 2, which latter at its end is forked or bifurcated and between and within the arms of said bifurcated end isjournaled a roller 4 whichV I preferably make of some elastic or yielding material as rubber to enable it to engage firmly with the floor when the device is in its locking position as presently described. The end ofthe longer angle formed by the long and short arms as seen at 8 and through the perforation passes a pin or bolt 9 which latter serves as a pivotal bearing for the lever. One end of the said fulcrum or. pivot pin or bolt is provided with a squared head 10, while its opposite end is threaded as seen at l1 and has a reduced unthreaded portion l2 which passes loosely through a perforation in a gage washer or plate 13. Said washer. or. plate is provided at the upper corners with lugs 14,15 adapted to-be engaged by the. ange or projection 7 on the lever when the latter is in the locked or unlocked position, said lugs by being engaged by the flange 7 serving to limit the throw of the lever in both directions.
It will be noted that when the bolt '9 is screwed up tightly, the washer and nut will be caused to 'bind closely against the shell or case whereby they will be held firmly in po` sition relatively to the latter. It will also be Vnoted that by loosening the pin or bolt, the
nut and washer will be free to be adjusted up or down onthe case and consequently adjust the position'of the lever closer -to or farther from the floor, and when in the desired position, the bolt may be tightened up again to hold the parts in their adjusted positions.
IOO
This adj ustability of the parts is an important feature of my invention, as it enables my device to be properly applied to doors the lower edges of which may be at variable distances from the floor so that the function and operation of the device may be successfully attained in all instances.
In applying my device to a door, it is positioned so that the lower edge of the case or shell will be ilush with or close to the lower edge of the door and` screws are then passed through the perforated ears of the case and into the door. The lever should bein such position relatively to the case that when the same is in the position indicated in Fig. 2,the roller will iirmly engage or bind against the door whereby to hold the door in any desired open position.
It will be noted that by reason ofthe greater weight of the longer arm of the lever l, the latter will in its unlocked or normal position appear as indicated in Fig. l with the short arm lying approximately parallel with the floor and the roller out of contact therewith and the flange 7 lying against the lug 15 ot washer 13. Now when it is desired to lock the door in any position, a person by means of the foot swings the lever over until the iange 7 engages with the lug 14 whereby the roller will be caused to engage firmly against the iioor and the parts will remain in such position until the lever is swung back again into the position seen in Fig. l.
The advantages possessed by my device will be obvious from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the ac companying drawings, and I would state that modificationsiu the construction and arrangements of the details of the device might be resorted to without departing from the principle and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Ina device of the character described,
naled in the lighter arm, all as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting section adapted to be secured to a door, of a lever carrying a roller at one end adapted to en gage with a iioor, a pin or bolt upon which said lever is pivotally mounted, a washer or plate carried by said bolt and a nut also carried by said bolt and adapted to screw upon the same, said plate and nut adapted to adjustably clamp the supporting section in the manner described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting section, provided with a vertical slot, a lever carrying a roller at one end adapted to engage with a floor, a pin or bolt upon which said lever is pivotally mounted and passing through the slot, a washer or plate carried by said bolt upon one side of said slot and a nut also carried by said bolt upon the opposite side of the slot and adapted to screw upon the bolt,
said washer and nut adapted to adjnstably clamp the supporting section as described and stops carried by the said section and adapted to limit the throw of the lever in cach direction.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES II. CAMERON. Witnesses:
H. A. GILBERT, OLAF OLSON.
