Description

Unrrnn STATES PATnNr OFFICE.
THOMAS XVILIEERN, OF OARIENTERSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-HANGER.
SIECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 632,609, dated September 5, 1899.
Application iiled March 23, 1899. Serial No. 710,163. (No model.)
To o7/Z wiz/0111. it 71mg/ concern.:
Be it known that I, THoMAs WILBERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarpentersville, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to that class of doorhaugers which is adapted to be used in connection with barn, Warehouse, and other outside doors, and in which there is a trolley secured to the door and arranged to move upon a track, all of which will more fully hereinafter appear.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical, and etlicient adjustable door-hanger.
A further object is to provide a door-hanger by which a door maybe moved and adjusted to suit varying conditions.
Other objects of the invention will appear from an inspection of the drawings, specification, and claims.
The invention consists, principally, in a door-hanger provided with an axle longitudinally adjustable thereon and a trolley-Wheel rotatablymounted on said axle and prevented from havingindependent longitudinal movements.
The invent-ion consists, further and finally, in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of my improvement, taken on line l of Fig. 5; Fig. 2, a rear view of the frame portion of the hanger; Fig. 3, a front elevation of the base-plate by which the hanger is secured to a door; Fig. 4, a detail sectional elevation of the trolley-Wheel and axle; and Fig. 5, a transverse sectional view, taken on lines 5 of Figs. l and 3.
In the art to which this invention relates it is highly desirable to provide a hanger for outside doors and gates with means by Which the door maybe adj usted in vertical and horizontal planes,'and the principal object of my invention is to provide simple and economical means to accomplish these results.
In constructing a door-hanger in accordance with my improvement I make a frame portion of the desired size and shape having a depending arm A and a hooded portion A. To support the hanger and furnish means by which the door B may be moved back and forth a frame portion is provided having a trolley-wheel O, rotatably mounted upon the bearing portion of an axle D, which has a threaded portion d, engaging With the threaded opening in the hooded part of the frame.
It is at times desirable to compensate for different thicknesses of the door, so that the trolley maybe readily operated upon its track E Without in any Way cramping or deranging the door. In order to accomplish this result, the axle has a threaded portion by which with its adjustable trolley it is moved longitudinally, so as to compensate for the dilerent positioning of the track. In order to move and lock the axle and trolley in operative position, the axle is provided with a polygonal head d and a jam or lock nut d2. The trolley-Wheei is mounted on the axle between the washers o and c', which are in turn hel( in place by means of a cross-pin c2.
It isdes'irable to provide means by which the trolley is prevented from jumping its track and to adjustably secure it so as to compensate for different Widths of track. To accomplish these results a stop-lug G is provided, which is adjustably secured to the frame portion by means ofthe stud g and the nut g passed through a slotted opening g2 in the frame portion. Examining Fig. l it will be seen that the trolley can move upon the track so as to compensate for dilerences in position and thickness ofthe door.
It is also desirable to1 raise and lower the door at either or both ends, and ,in order to accomplish this result a base-plate H is provided, having lugs 7i, through which screws or carriage-boltsh may be passed to secure it to the movable door. This base-plate is provided with a set or sets of serrated teeth H extending transversely across the same and adapted to be engaged by serrated teeth o extending transversely across the depending arm of the frame portion, as shown-particularly in Fig. l. Abolt I is provided, which is passed through an elongated vertical opening a in the frame portion and engages with i the base-plate, so as to hold the parts together.
When it is desirable to raise or lower the door at either or both ends, this securing-bolt is IOO loosened, so as to permit the disengagement of the serrations or teeth. The frame portion is then raised or lowered, as necessity may require, and the desired rengagement obtained.
From the foregoing description of construction and operation it will be seen that the door may be adjusted in vertical and horizontal planes at either or both ends to compensate for Wear and different structural conditions, and that the trolley-Wheel may be adjusted longitudinally, so as to compensate for any errors in positioning of the track, and, further, that means are provided for changing the guard-lug to accommodate any Width of track. It will also be seen from the foregoing and from an inspection of the drawings that all of the elements that have been described contribute to one economical resultviz., the positioning and holding ot the trolley on the track or the lateral positioning of the door. For instance, should the track E happen to be in a position above and to the left of its present position, as shown in Fig. l, it will be seen that the trolley-Wheel would have to be raised and also be moved inwardly. It is therefore necessary to have both of the adjustments above described-the vertical and horizontalto perform this one result. The stop G also acts to prevent the trolley from jumping the track, and as the tracks vary in Width and thickness it is necessary that this stop should also be adjustable.
I claiml. A door-hanger provided With an axle longitudinally adjustably mounted'thereon, and a trolley-wheel rotatably mounted on said axle and prevented from having independent longitudinal movements, substantially as described.
2. A door-hanger comprising a frame portion provided with a depending arm, an axle longitudinally adjustably secured to the frame at or near its upper portion, and a trolley-Wheel on such axle, substantially as described.
3. A door-hanger comprising a frame portion provided with a depending7 arm, an axle longitudinally adj ustably secured to the frame at or near its upper portion, a trolleywheel rotatably mounted on such axle, and means for vertically adj ustably securing the depending arm to a door, substantially as described.
4. A door-hanger comprising a frame having an upper hooded portion and a lower depending arm, an axle longitudinally adjustably secured in the hooded portion, a trolley rotatably mounted upon the axle, a base-plate adapted to be secured to a door, and means for vertically adjustably securing the baseplate and depending arm together, substantially as described.
5. A door-hanger comprising a frame portion provided with a depending arm, an axle longitudinally adjustably secured to the frame at or near its upper portion, a trolley rotatably mounted on the axle, a guard-lug adjustably secured to the frame beneath the trolley-Wheel, and means for vertically adjustably securing the depending arm to a door, substantially as described.
6. A door-hanger comprising a frame provided With an upper hooded portion and a lower depending arm, an axle provided With a threaded portion engaging a threaded opening in the hooded portion, a trolley rotatably mounted on the axle, a base-plate adapted to be secured to a door and provided With transverse projections or teeth, transverse projections or teeth on the depending arm adapted to engage the teeth on the base-plate, and bolt mechanism for securing the base-plate and depending arm together, substantially as described.
7. A door-hanger comprising a frame provided with an upper hooded portion and a lower depending arm, an axle provided with a threaded portion ad j ustably engaging a threaded opening in the hooded portion, a trolley rotatably mounted on the axle, a baseplate adapted to be secured to a door and provided with transverse projections or teeth, transverse projections or teeth on the depending arm adapted to engage the teeth on the base-plate, bolt mechanism for securing the base-plate and depending arm together, and a lug ad justably secured to the frame portion beneath the trolley-Wheel, substantially as described.
