SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,229, dated January 6,1885.
ApplicationlilcdAugust,198i. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom Z 71mg/ concern: tal screw, g, which is inserted in a threaded Be it known that I, OBADIAIT SEELY, ol' the opening formed at the outer end of the plate E.
city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga II represents the rider-bar, which rests on and State of New York, have invented new the axle c between the rollers O C, and holds 55 5 and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of the latter on the track-rails B B. The 'riderwhich the following is a specification. bar II is composed of a horizontal portion, 71, rlhis invention relates to an improvement which rests on the shaft @,andtwo downwardin that class of door-hangers which are enily-projecting arms, 7L 7i?, formed on opposite ployed i'or supporting sliding doors from the ends ot' the horizontal portion h. 6o ro top, and which consist of an adjustable bear- I represents a horizontal arm orlever, which ing or rider-bar attached to the upper edge of is pivoted near its center to the base-plate I) the door, and rollers or wheels which support by a pivot-bolt, i'. The lever I is preferably the riderlbar and run onhorizontal rails above bifurcated, so as to straddle the raised p0rthe door. tion d of the base-plate D, to which it is piv- 6 15 rIlhe object of my invention is to so conoted, and the bifurcated arms t of the lever struct the hanger that it can be easily adare pivoted at their ends to the end of the arm j usted and the rider-bar retained in aparallel It ol" the rider-bar. The opposite end of the position with the rails or upper edge ot the I lever I is provided with a U-shaped lug7 j, in
door. which is arranged a screw-nut, Zr. 70 2o My invention eo1isists,tothis end,in thepar- Z represents an inclined ear or lug which 1s ticular construction ci" the hanger, which will arranged at the i'ront end ot the plate D, and be hereinafter fully described,an d pointed out M represents a screw-bolt which extends from in the claims. the lug Z through the screw-nut s'to the short In the accompanying drawings7 Figure l arm if of the rider-bar, andis connected thererepresents a side elevation ol' one oi' my imto by means of a threaded socket, a. formed proved doorhangers. Fig. 2 is an end elevaat the end of the arm h. The bolt M is pr0- tion thereof. Fig. fl is a sectional top plan vided with lci't and right hand screw-threads view, with the riderbar and rollers removed. m in', which engage, respectively, with the Figs. 4 and?) are vertical cross-sections in lines scrcw-nut Z: and threaded socket n ofthe rider- So 3o .t and g/ y, Fig. l. bar. The screw-bolt M is provided with a Like letters of reference rel'er to like parts notched head, o, which bears against the unin the several figures. der side of the lug Z, and with a collar, o', A represents the upper portion of a sliding which bears against the upper side of the lug. door, and Il B the horizontal rails arranged The lug Z is provided with an open longitudi- 85 5 above the door in the usual manner. nal slot-,through which the bolt isinserted, the
O C represent the wheels or rollers ot' the bifurcated arms or jaws of thelug which stradhanger, which are secu red to a shaft, c, at the die the bolt being coniined between the head proper distance apart to run upon the rails o and collar o'. By this means the screw-bolt l I3. is prevented from moving longitudinally in 9o 4o D represents the baseplate of the hanger, the lug Z, but is free to turn therein. lIhe which is secured to the upper edge of the door screw-nut L is confined between the jaws of A in any suitable manner. The plate I) is the lug j by means of grooves or recesses k', preferably provided along its lower edge with formed on opposite sides of the nut. The inclined ledges d, which Alit between ears or faces of the grooves 7el which bear against the 95 45 lugs c, havinginclinedinner sides, and formed inner faces of the jaws of the lug j are flaton a horizontal plate, E, which is secured to tened and prevent the nut from turning in the the upper edge of the door by screws f. The lug. rIhcupperandlower edges ofthegrooves plate I) is attached to the horizontal plate E Zz, which bear against the upper and lower by sliding its lower edge between the lugs c, edges of the jaws ofthe lug j, are rounded or 10o 50 and when adjusted to the proper position it beveled off from the center of the grooves tois iirinly secured to the plate E by a horizonward their opposite ends, so as to allow the end of the lever I, on which the lug j is formed, rider-bar adj usted in a horizontal position,
to be raised and lowered with the nut k as the screw-bolt M is turned, without the jaws of the lug binding against the edges of the grooves in the sides of the nut. It will be Seen that by turning the screw-bolt M in one or the other direction the lever I is caused to swing on its pivot z'. IVhen the bolt is turned to the right, the forward end of the lever I is raised by means of the screw-nut 7o riding npward on the threaded portion fm of the bolt while the opposite end of the lever is being lowered. As the bolt is being turned in this direction the threaded portion m of the bolt engages in the threaded nsocket it on the arm h2 of the rider-bar and forces the same downward, while the opposite arm, h', of the riderbar, which is pivoted to the descending end of the lever I, is also forced downward at the same time. By turning the bolt M in the opposite direction the forward end of the levcr I is moved down by the screw-nut 7.1, and the riderbar is raised by the ascending end'of the lever I and the threaded socket a engaging with the threaded portion m of the bolt.
'The portion of the door to which the hanger is attached can be readily raised or lowered, as may be necessary to level or adj ust the door, by turning the screw-bolt M, and during such adjustment the rider-bar is parallel with the upper edge of the door. The plate D is provided above the lever I with a vertical spindle, p, on which is mounted a guide or antifriction roller, I). 'Ihe roller l) is so arranged as to run between the rails B B and retain the wheels C C upon the rails and prevent the hanger from binding between the rails.
My improved hanger can be readily attached to the door, and possesses the requisite adj ustability which enables the door to be'adjusted and leveled andthe rider-bar adjusted to a parallel'position with the rails or top edge of the door, thus avoiding any liability oi" the rollers binding between the rails and the riderbar.
I am aware of the pending application of substantially as set forth.

3. In a door-hanger, the combination, with a rider-bar, H, and base-plate D, of a lever, I, pivoted to the base-plate, and provided at one of its ends with a movable screw-nut, k, and a screw-bolt, M, substantially as set forth.
4. In a door-hanger, the combination7 with a rider-bar, I'I, and base-plate D, of a lever, I, pivoted to said base-plate, and provided with a movable screw-nut, 7., and a bolt, M, provided with right and left hand screw-threads on m, and connecting the riderbar and baseplate and engaging with Ithe nut 7:, substantially as set forth.
5. In a door-hanger, the combination, with the plate D, provided with a slotted lug, Z, and rider-bar H, having a threaded socket, u, of a lever, I, pivoted to the rider-bar and baseplate, and provided at one of its ends with a threaded nut, L', and a bolt, M, provided with right and left hand screw-threads, and engaging with the nut l: and threaded socket n, substantially as set forth.
6. In a door-hanger, the combination, with an adjustable rider-bar and supporting-rollers, ot' a base-plate, D, secured to the door, and a friction-roller, I), attached to said baseplate independently of the rider-bar, substantially as set forth. Y
7. In a door-hanger, the combination, with the base-plate D, provided with a frictionroller, I), and a slotted lug, l, ol" a rider-bar, II, having arms It h2 and threaded socket n., a lever, I, pivoted at its center to the base-plate and at one end to the rider-bar, and provided at its opposite end with a threaded nut, k, and a screw-bolt, M, secured at its lower end to the base-plate, and provided with right and left hand screw-threads m m', engaging, respectively, with the nut lo of the leverY I and the socket a of the rider-bar, substantially as set forth.
