To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. Mrnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Barn- Doors and other Structures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hangers for barn I doors and other structures.
The first object of the present invention is to provide a new and efiicient means for relatively adjusting the supporting mem bers by which the door and truck frame are connected together.
The second object of the invention is to provide a novel guiding means to insure the proper relative movement between the door and its supporting member when the said supporting member is adjusted relatively thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device with a portion of the rail roof broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device with parts in section; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the pivot pin and the laterally adjustable feature in connection therewith.
In the drawings one structure embodying the invention is shown. As indicated at 1, the protecting roof 2 is mounted upon any suitable part of a building. Upon this roof is mounted a track the said roof through spacers 4: having reduced portions 5 and 6. These reduced portions 5 and 6 pass through openings in the rail and roof, respectively. The subject matter disclosed in connection with the above protecting roof and rail is described and claimed in a separate application, Ser. No. 7 2,010, filed by me January 14:, 1916.
Mounted upon the track 3 is a suitable trolley or truck comprising a pair of wheels 7 spaced apart bysuitable links 7. Pivotally mounted at 8 upon the links and extending below the same is a pendant member 9. The pendant member has struck out there from immediately below the track a projection 10 which is for the purpose of keeping the trolley upon the said track and preventing the displacement thereof. The lower portion of the pendant member 9 is enlarged,
3 which is connected to as indicated at 11, to form bearings for. a suitable pivot pin 12. Slidably mounted upon this pivot pin 12 is an elongatedmember 13 having aslot 1 1. The member 13 constitutes an upper part of an integral casting which is adjust'ably mounted upon the door or other structure which will be described later. The pin 12 is mounted within the said slot and the two parts 18 and 12 are adjustable relatively to each other. In order to adjust these parts a screw 15 is suitably mounted within openings 16 and 17 of the said member 13. The screw is arranged for rotation only andis fixed as far as longitudinal movement relative to the member 13 is concerned. The pivot pin 12 has a transverse screw threaded opening therein, as indicated at 18, through which the screw 15 passes. It will be seen that as the screw is rotated there will be relative movement between the member 13 and the pin 12, thus adjusting the casting laterally. It will be understood, however, that I do not wish to belimited to the particular struc ture here shown and described, as other means may be used which may performthe same result. It is not essential that the particular form of screw, for instance, which is shown in the drawings should. be used.
Extending from the member 13 is a laterally projecting piece 19 which terminates in a vertically extending member 20 constituting a bolt screw-threaded at 21. This bolt as shown at 23, to the door or other structure 24:. Below the lug 22 and threaded upon the member 21 is a suitable nut 25. It will be seen by this arrangement that the door can be adjusted vertically. The upper portion of the hasp has extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof a slot, indicated at 26, as shown in Fig. 1. This slot is directly in back of the vertical member 20 and the member 19 extends across the same and above it. Upon the portion 19 of the castirig is situated a pair of grooves 27 one located at each side. These grooves are arranged to cooperate with the edges 28 of the slot 26 to form a guide for the bolt 20 as it is adjusted up and down. It should be noted that the arrangement of guide and slot here shown may be reversed and still be within the scope of the invention. It will be seen that the arrangement shown and described produces a very durable and suitable structure. The door can be adjusted relatively to the truck and at the same time guided positively Without any torque being placed upon the same. I
To accommodate the upper portions of the casting comprising the portions 13 and 19 the upper part ofthe door is cut out or recessed, as shown at 29. In adjusting the device vertically all that is necessary is to turn the nut 25 in either direction according to the Way that the adjustment is required, and at the same time that the bolt 22 is moved up and down it will be guided along the edges 28 of the slot 26 by means of the slots 27 therein. At the same time the lateral portion of the casting will move more or less into the recess 29. For lateral adjustment all that is necessary is to rotate the screw 15 and this will cause relative movement between the trolley and the door. The pivot pin 12 will move longitudinally of the slot 14. It will be understood, however, that this movement is only relative. It does not make any difference whether it is the part 13 that moves or the part 12. It will also'be seen that the structure shown is simple and contains a minimum of parts. The parts 13, 19 and 20 constitute an integral casting while the hanger 9 forms another integral device with the single pivot pin 12 connecting the two parts together. In most devices of this nature there are several parts connected or pivoted together in various ways. I have simplified the structure in this re spect.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hanger, a pendant member, a member for supporting a structure, a pin mounted upon one of said members and pivotally connecting the members, the other member having a sliding engagement with said pin,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner and an adjusting device for bodily moving the members relatively to each other.
2. In a hanger, a pendant member, a member for supporting a structure, a pin pivotally connecting said members together, and an adjusting device in engagement with said pin for bodily moving the members rela tively to each other, and means upon one of the members for suitably guiding the pin during the relative movement of the members.
3. In a hanger, a truck having a pendant member, a member for supporting a strueture, a pin pivotally connecting said members together, a screw rotatably mounted upon one of said members, said pin being provided with a screw-threaded opening through which the said screw passes, where by the members may be relatively adjusted laterally, and means upon one of said members for suitably guiding said pin during the relative movement.
4. In a hanger, a pendant member, a menr ber for supporting a structure, a pin pivotally connecting said members together, screw held against axial movement but rotatably mounted on one of said members, said pin having a screwthreaded opening there in through which said screw passes, whereby the members are relatively adjusted, the member upon which said screw is mounted being non-rotatable relatively to said pin.
5. In a hanger, a truck having a pendant member, a member for supporting a structure, a pin pivotally connecting said members, an elongated member mounted upon one of said first-mentioned members, said elongated membcr having a slot embracing said pin, a screw rotatably mounted within said elongated member, and a screw-threaded opening in said pin through which said screw passes, whereby the elongated member may be adjusted laterally relatively to said pin.
