Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Inn L. BEALL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Alma, in the r county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventiom'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to the hinges which are adapted to support and cooperate with doors, gates, etc., the object of the construction being to provide an adjustment whereby the same may be raised and lowered.
Hinges have been constructed heretofore wherein an adjustment is provided to regulate "the distance of the gate from the supporting post, but it is the object of the present invention to provide a means whereby not only the distance of the 'ate from the support post may be regulate but also the height of the gate above the ground may be simultaneously adjusted.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, wherein: p

The hinge forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a plate secured to the face of the gate by screws at one terminal thereof, last named terminal being adjacent to the gate. Each pair of these bolts carry at their outer terminals a guide which cooperates with a grooved plate operable in said guide and provided with a knuckle at its outer terminal. This knuckle provides for the connection between the curved plate and the pintle carried by the gate post. The inner terminal of the curved plate last named is provided with a series of serrations, said serrations surrounding'a slot formed in said plate and curved to the contour thereof. A stationary bolt pierces the gate post and projects through said curved slot and carries at its outer terminal a head, the inner surface of which is provided with a plurality of serrations or corrugations which are adapted to cooperate with the serrations of the plate and retain the same in various positions in accordance with the adjustment thereof. Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, B illustrates generally in dotted lines a gate post having hinged thereto a gate A, said post and gate being of any' suitable construction. Attached to the gate in approximately the same position as the ordinary hinge would be, is a curved plate 10. This plate 10 is secured at its inner terminal to the gate A by the screws ,11 which pierce said plate and project into the said gate A. The outer or opposite termi-' nal of the plate 10 is secured to the gate by the bolts 12 each pair of whichcarry at their outer terminals a transversel arranged'guide 13 which is provided wlth an annular depression 14 in the inne iace thereof. There are two of these guides which provide a means for the adjustment of the supporting plate, as will. be hereinafter more fully described.
A supporting plate 15 curved to conform with the plate 10 is mounted in the depressionslt of the guides 13 and is adapted to reciprocate therein, the outer terminal of said plate being provided with a vertical knuckle 16 for the reception of the pintles 17, carried by the post B, said pint-1e and knuckles constituting the pivotal point of said gate. 15 is provided wit-h a series of transversely arranged serrations 18 on both sides thereof, which extend substantially one-half the distance of said plate, and which are located on the edges of a longitudinal slot 19 which cuts through the inner terminal of said plate.
The rear terminal of the plate A stationary bolt 20 pierces the gate A and projects through the slot- 19, said bolt being provided at its outer terminal with a head 21, the inner surface of which isprovided with serrations or corrugations, which are adapted to engage the similar elements v 18 of the plate 15. The inner terminal of the bolt 20 is provided with a nut 22, whereby v v the same may be loosened and tightened when so desired.
When it 1s desired to raise the gate, the nut 22 is loosened from the bolt 20 permitting said bolt to move ohtwardly, thereby removing the corrugations of the nut 21 from engagement with the serrations or corrugations 18 of the plate. 15. This permits the plate 10 and consequently the gate A to be moved in either direction, preferably in the direction of'the arrow 1n Fig. 1. Due to the curved structure of the plates 10 and 15, the movement of the plate 10 and the I justed position.
' Fig. 4 illustrates a bolt 20 having a serrated washer 21 loosely mounted thereon in lieu of having serrations formed in the head of the bolt, as illustrated in Fig. 2. v
Although the present invention is illustrated distinctly in its preferred form, it is clearly understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It Will further be seen that if so desired the plate 10 and the structure carried thereby, namely, the supporting plate 15, may
be secured to the gate post while the pintle 16 may be carried by the gate. This merely a matter of choice and does not change the spirit or breadth of the present invention.
Minor changes such as material, reportions and location of the various cements curved plate mounted on said gate post,
guides secured to said curved plate, an auX- iliary plate mounted for reciprocation in said gate, means whereby said gate may be pivoted to the outer. terminal of the said auxiliary plate, serrations formed at the inner terminal of the said auxiliary plate, and a bolt carried by said post adapted to engage said serrations and retain said plate in various positions.
