Description
ITFICE.
PATENT ALFRED V. BYDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRUNK AND BUREAU.
Speciticationforniing part of Letters Patent No. 53,045, dated March 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED V. RYDER, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combination ot' a Trunk and Bureau; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
This invention consists in combining a trunk and bureau in. such a manner that an article may be obtained which may be conveniently carried, handled, and transported as a traveling-trunk, and be capable of being unfolded and adjusted with the greatest facility to serve as a bureau in a bed-room or other compartment.
In accompanying plate of drawings, Figure l represents my invention folded, partly in section, and adjusted as a traveling-trunk. Fig. 2 shows it adjusted as a bureau.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My improvement may be constructed with a body or frame of wood, or wood and metal combined, and covered with leather in a manner similar to or precisely like the ordinary traveling-trunks in use. l should prefer this mode of construction. This body is composed ot' two parts, A B, which may or may not be of equal dimensions, and said parts are con nected by hinges C to admit ot' them being folded in contact, and secured by a lock and key, D, the latter being at the side opposite to that where the two parts are connected by hinges O. (See Fig. l.)
Each part A B of the body ot the trunk is provided with drawers D. Two drawers are shown in each part, but more may be used if necessary or desired. These drawers may each be provided with a lock, and when the two parts are closed in contact and the device used as a trunk `the outer sides, c, of the drawers will be in contact, (see Fig. 1,) and said drawers cannot be casually opened or withdrawn, nor can they be rilied of their contents without the two parts being fully opened or unfolded, so the two sides b b or the parts A B will be in contact with each other. This fea ture serves as a great barrier to robbery in traveling, for trunks during transportation are most generally stacked or piled one upon another in such a manner as to preclude the possibility of a trunk ot' my invention being moved and opened without a person being detected in the act.
When the device is to be used as a bureau the two parts A B are unfolded and the two sides b b adjusted in contact, one resting upon the other. This causes the drawers D to be one directly over the other, as shown in Fig. 2.
This trunk and bureau may be constructed at a Avery moderate expense. There are no parts liable to get out of repair, and it may be converted from a bureau to a trunk, and vice versa, with the greatest facility.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combined trunk and bureau herein described, the same consisting of the parts A B, hin ged together at C, and provided with drawers D, as and for the purpose explained.
ALFRED V. RYDER.
