DANIEL FITZGERALD, OF YORK, N. Y.
SAFE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF PAPERS, WHICH CAN BE USED AS A DES-K.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 358-, dated August 15, 1837.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL FITZGERALD, of the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safes, and that the following is a full and eXact description thereof.
This safe is called the counting house safe. It is generally made in two parts, the outer and inner safe. The outer safe (marked H, on the plan) is generally made of wrought iron or other materials. Between the outside and inside coats of the safe a nonconducting composition is put. This outer safe is intended to protect and inclose the inner one and is open at the top. The safe is placed in the Center of an ordinary counting house desk or writing table, (marked A). The inner safe (marked K,) is similarly constructed as to the materials as the outer safe, but is closed at the top and opens on'either side. The inner safe is intended to contain the books and papers some wood work is generally put in for shelves. The lnner safe is dropped into the outer one when it is desired to lock it or secure it from ire or robbery, and when it is desired to raise it out it is done by means of a shaft and crank (marked G,) placed above it and attached to a'rack or frame. When the inner safe is raised out of the outer one the bottom of the inside safe is on a level with the top of the desk or writing table (as marked The doors (marked E) which are hinged at the bottom of the inside safe when opened form a table on which to write.
Vhat I claim in this safe and desk as my own invention not heretofore known or used and for which I desire an exclusive right and privilege is 1. That of forming a writing table of the door of the safe or raising chest or case.
2. The combination of safe and desk or writing table.
DANIEL FITZGERALD.
