Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Application filed June 2, 1913. Serial No. 771,277.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN VARGA, a cit zen of the United States, residing at Gill: cage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in desks and its object is to provide a desk having secret compartments that are so disposed within the body of the dos; as to be unobserved by an ordinary examination of the desk; such compartments are particularly useful as filing places for valuable papers, documents, etc., which it is desired to keep in secret and to avoid possible theft of the same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved desk. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4: is a detail of a portion of the desk with the locking pin in open position. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the locking pin about to be moved into closed position. Fig. 6 is a side view of Fig. 5 with the locking pin in closed position.
Like reference characters indicate correspending parts throughout the several views.
My desk comprises the legs 1, 2 between which the center drawer 3 is located. In the leg 2 the regular drawers 1 are disposed. The legs 1, 2 are disposed, respectively, upon the bases 5, 6 and to one side of the leg 1 adjacent the base 5 a door 7 is secured by a spring pressed hinge as at S to a shelf 12, said hinge being so positioned as to be entirely hidden when the door 7 is in normal position or disposed against the leg 1. The appearance of the door 7 in its closed or normal position is merely as a wall. of the leg 1 and it would not be recognized as having any other function upon the closest in spection. To the top or free end of the door. 7 a catch 9 is secured adapted for releasable locking engagement with one of the angular ends 9 of a latclrpin 10 extending trans versely through the top of the leg 1 and re taincd in operative position by sleeves 11, 11 secured to the desk. The leg 1 is hollow and open adjacent the door 7 and within the log a plurality of shelves or transverse partitions 12 are disposed which are normally hidd on from view by the door 7 and upon which shelves valuables may be kept secret from parties having access to the desk who may be unmarpiainted with its secret compartments.
13 is a central drawer disposed between the legs 1, 2 and it is provided with front and rear release-pins 141-, 11 the former being disposed in a plane above the latter and as said drawer is drawn entirely out of its chamber the latter pin comes in contact with the latch-pin 10 through the medium of its angular ends 9*" and moves the same so that the angular termination 9 in engagement with the catch 9 is moved out of contact with that catch permitting the spring-hinge 8 to oscillate the door 7 away from the leg 1 opening said door and revealing the hidden compartments 12. Re-hiserting the drawer 13, after the door 7 has been inanually moved back into normal position, will again through front pin 14- throw the latchpin 10 into locking engagement with the catch 9 retaining said door in closed position.
The leg 2 is preferably formed with the usual drawers 141", 15, 16, etc., and to either side of said drawers said leg is provided with secret compartments in every way similar to the compartments of the leg 1. The doors 7 of the leg 2 are built and operated similar to the door 7 of leg 1 and are hinged as at S and said doors secrete the compartments l2. Tlransverso pins 10, 10 are socured, respectively, to one of the partitions 12 and the desk top and are operated respectively, by release-pins 1 1, let, carried by the drawers 15, 14;.
What is claimed is In a desk provided with a central drawer, a leg provided with compartments, a door hinged to said leg opening into said compartments, a catch carried by said door, a latch-pin transversely disposed in said leg normally in engagement with said catch, rear and front pins carried by said central drawer and disposed, respectively, in planes one below the other; said rear pin being adapted for engagement with said latch-p111 as the saw! drawer 1s withdrawn :trom the as my own I have hereto affixed my signature 1n the presence of two snbscrlblng w1tnesses. desk and said front pin being adapted for JOHN VARGA. 5 engagement therewith as said drawer is re- Witnesses:
