WILLMORE FOWLER, OF OSKALOOSA, IOXVA.
BOX-LID HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,274, dated October 9, 1894.
Application filed February 9, 1894. Serial No. 499,612. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLMORE W. FOWLER,
a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Box-Lid Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple and durable device especially adapted to be applied to boxes having hinged lids, containing cigars, or other goods displayed for sale, so that said lids may be held vertically or at any angle to be prevented from overlapping adjacent boxes, to promote convenience in handling the boxes and to provide improved meansfor displaying prices, descriptions of the goods, or other printed matter of interest to purchasers.
To this end my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination with a box having a hinged lid, of two devices adapted to be connected respectively with the box and lid and a piece for connect ing said devices as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the complete holder the dotted lines showinga modified form of clamp. Fig. 2 is an edge view of a modified form of the device and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cigar box having my device applied thereto as in practical use, the dotted lines showinga modified form of clamp. Referring to the accompanying drawings the reference letter A is used toindicate the part to be attached to the edge of a box. This part is preferably made of sheet metal bent in its central portion with its sides separated sufficiently to admit and clasp the edges of a box so that when said part is placed in position it will be firmly fixed against lateral movements and is made to fit tight enough toprevent its being elevated above the edge of the box by ordinary handling.
B indicates a part similar to the part A and adapted to overlap and clasp the edges of the lid. In the modified form shown in Fig. 3, the front surface of this part is enlarged sufficiently to permit printed matter to be placed thereon, indicative of the price, grade or brand of the contained goods.
C indicates a part for connecting the parts A and B and is preferably permanently attached to the edges thereof, thus fixing the angle which the lid and box will bear relative to each other, when connected by the device. It will be obvious that the part B may be extended laterally from the part A at either side thereof so that it may be applied either to the right or left edge thereof and it will also be obvious that said part B may be permanently fixed at any angle relative to a vertical plane so that the lid may be made to stand in other than a right angled position relative to the top of the box.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 2 a joint D is provided in the central portion of the part 0 and a pivotal connection D provided at the junction of the parts B and C, so that the device may be adjusted to any desirable angle. It will be seen that the joint D alone would allow a limited movement of the lid relative to the box, and I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the particular location or form of said joint.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A holder for box lids, comprising a part Ushaped in transverse section adapted to overlap and clamp the top edge of one of the end pieces of a box, a like part adapted to overlap and clamp the edge of a box lid and a part connecting the same, for the purposes stated.
2. A holder for box lids comprising a part A, adapted to engage and clamp the top and sides of one of the end pieces of a box, a part adapted to overlap and clamp the edge of a box lid and a support pivotally attached to one of said clamps and fixed to the other, and a joint in said support, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
WILLMORE W. FOWLER.
