NITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL ROMAN, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
ClGAR-PACKAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,943, dated October 2, 1894.
Application filed June 15, 1894. Serial No. 514,659. (No model) To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SAMUEL ROMAN, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in packing cigars and consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter describedand pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is aperspective view of the box closed. Fig, 2 is a similar view showing the box open, the package'of cigars being in place on the base plate. 'Fig. 3 is a detail view of the practically rigid package frame and Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the joint between the base plate and fixed side plate of the box.
The box A is formed with a base plate B, a fixed end piece 0, a hinged end piece D and hinged side pieces or wings E E one of which carries a clasp e which hooks in the closed position of the box over the upperedge of the other side piece. The end piece 0 is upright at the edgeof the base piece and is preferably jointed thereto as shown. In such construction the base piece has at its edge an upright flange b which is doubled and crimped into connection with the lower edge of the fixed end piece 0. This is the practice when the box is made of tin or other sheet metal. If made of wood the fixed end piece may be secured in other suitable manner. The hinged side pieces or wings have at their edges projecting flanges E which in the closed position lap along the outer sides of the fixed and hinged end pieces and so serve to hold said end pieces in closed position the single clasp e operating to secure the ends as well as the sides or wings closed.
The package is made angular in cross section and preferably triangular. When brought to the form the package is encircled by the practically rigid frame H, the ends of which are secured together. This frame operates to retain the cigar bundle in the angular cross sectional shape into which it has been pressed. This is an important feature of my invention and so far as I am informed I am the first to provide a practically rigid frame by which to hold a correspondingly formed bundle of cigars in the desired shape preserving them in such shape whether they be in or out of the box. This also permits the box to be spread open and the package to be exhibited therein as shown in Fig. 2. 7
The triangular form of the box does not in terfere with economy of space in packing or shipping the cigars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. In a cigar package a box composed of the base plate, the fixed upright end piece at one edge of said base plate, the end piece hinged at the opposite edge of the base plate, the side pieces or wings hinged at the side edges of the base plate and provided at their edges with projecting flanges which lap along the outer sides of the fixed and hinged end pieces said end pieces being triangular, and a clasp or fastening by which to secure the upper free edges of the end pieces or wings together when the box is closed, substantially as set forth.
2. A cigar package substantially as described consisting of the bundle or package of cigars made angular in cross section and held practically rigid, in such shape, the box having a base plate a fixed end piece a hinged end piece and hinged side pieces or wings all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
.3. In a cigar package the improved box herein described consisting of the base provided at one edge with an upright flange, the
fixed triangular end piece jointed at its lower edge to said flange, the hinged triangular end piece, the hinged side pieces or wings provided at their free edgeswith rigid projecting flanges which lap along the outer sides of the fixed and hinged end pieces and a fastening'by which to secure the upper free edges of the end pieces or wings together when the box is closed all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
