NITED STATES PATENT FEIcE.
HENRY BRIGGS, OF HAsBRoUoK HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY, AND CHRISTIAN DANCEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,974, dated September 11, 1894.
Application filed December 15, 1893- Serial No. 49317 (N0 od To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY BRIGGS, residing at I-Iasbrouck Heights, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, and CHRIS- TIAN DANOEL, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to make a leather shoe or boot as near waterproof as possible.
The peculiar and novel construction of our boot or shoe is pointed out in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the front part of a shoe made according to our invention, the line 00 0: Fig. 2 indicating the plane of section. View of the same.
The shoe-upper consists of two layers or thicknesses of leather or other suitable material, the outer layer being marked A and the inner layer B.
G is the outer sole. D is the welt and O is the insole.
Fig. 2 is a plan or top The welt D is placed upon the outer sole and it is secured to the inner layer B and to the insole O by means of stitches E, said welt being provided with a channel a so that the stitches E will be located between the under surface of the welt and the upper surface of the outer sole G. The outer layer A of the upper is bent outward so as to form a lip 11 situated on the top of the welt and it is secured by stitches F passing through said lip and througlrthe welt and engaging the outer sole G. The edge of the inner layer B is thus secured between the insole O and weltD while the edge of the outer layer A bends outward on top of the welt D so that any water landing on the outside of layer A will be guided to run off over the outside edges of the welt and outer sole without penetrating to the interior of, the shoe. I
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A boot or shoe the upper of which is composed of two layers A B, an insole C, an outer sole Grand a welt D, said welt being provided with a channel a and united to the inner layer B and the insole C by stitches E located between the under surface of the welt and upper surface of the outer sole, while the outer layer A of the upper is provided with an outwardly projecting lip 12 located above the welt and united to the welt and outer sole by stitches F substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
