Description

N-PETEHS, PROT LITHOGRAPHER WASH MGTON D C UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
WM. H. JENNIsoN, oE NEW YORK, N. v ,.AssIGNoR To WM. KUMBEL. n
RIVETING LEATHER BANDS.
Specification of Letters lPatentNo. 5,246, dated August 14, 184:7.
v To all whom t may concern.'
Be it knoWn that I, WM. H. JENNIsoN,v
of the city and State of New York, haveinvented a new Mode or Formfor Making Rivets for Machine Leather Banding and other Purposes; and I do hereby vvdeclare that the following isa full and exact description. 1 l
The nature of my invention consists in making the head of the rivet concave and the` shank oval, as exhibited in, the annexed drawings for-ming a part of this specification.
Figure 1, represents the heads of the improved rivets in the joint or splice of theV views of the common shank. Figs. 6( and 7 Y cut section of the flat and round head rivet with bur. Fig. 6 flat head rivet. Fig. 7 round head rivet. Fig. 8, bur for common rivets, Figs. 9, and 10, view of the flat and round head rivet inserted in the common band. Figs. 1l,V and l2, out section of the above.
The advantage of the improved form over those in use Will be understood from the folf Y lowingfacts, the head being concave instead of -flat or convex, presents less surface V3 v to the pulley thereby preventing the great inconvenience of ythe band slipping. The oval shank being inserted Ain an oval hole the largest diameter of whichv .being in a line With the band,v admits of placing a greater. number in lineV andk as one third less leather is removed for theirV insertion they afford increased strength to the band.V In riveting, a convex projection from the rivetin stake or plate conforming to the concavlty of the head of the rivet isused. i v
To enable others skilled in the artito make and use my invention, I Will describe the i mode. Y
I construct male and female dies conform# ing to the concave head and oval shank of the rivet, in thesame manneras those used for dieing up the common kind.
1What I claim as my lnvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 'f The abovedescribed form of rivet in comf bination with and forthe purpose of unit'- Y ing leather belts, substantially. as described,
which I call the concave head andk oval` WM. D. WATERMAN, P. W. KUMBEL.
