Description

(No Model.)
P. OTT.` Rivet.
No. 243,605. Patemd June '28, |881.
v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK OTT, OF CAMBRIA, CALIFORNIA.
RIVET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,605, dated June 28, 1881. Application filed November '27, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK OT'I, of Cambria, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Rivets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description Of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tO make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a perspective view Of my improved rivet with its burr. Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating its application for uniting two pieces of leather Or other material; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through line a Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to rivets of that class that are used by shoe-makers and harness makers for heavy work, or for riveting belts for driving machinery, leather hose, blacksmiths aprons, or similar articles of manufacture com posed Of several thicknesses of leather orother tough fabric 5 audit consists in the improvement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A is the hea-dof the rivet, -which is made with two rivet-pins or pointed studs, a a, projecting from its under side parallel to and diametrically Opposite to each oth er.
B is the burr, which is of a size and shape conforming to that of the rivet-head, and provided with two perforations, b l1, registering With the pins a a On the head. The burr B is made with a groove or channel, C, reaching diametrically across its face from one of the perforations b to the other on the Opposite side, whieh receives the projecting parts of the studs or rivetpins a after these have been passed through their respective perforations and are bent down upon the head Or clinched, thus making the clinched rivet perfectly smooth and even on both sides, and, besides, protecting the studs a a from wear.
It will be observed that this 'rivet requires no swaging in its application, that it can be easily applied and again readily removed when desired, while at the same time it can be manufactured at a small cost, and is always ready and handy for use.
Having thus described my im provement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A rivet composed of a rose-head, A, having two pointed studs, a a, projecting from its liat under side, and a circular burr, B, having two perforations, b b, registering with said studs a a, and provided with the diametrical groove or channel C, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. FREDERICK OTT.
