SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-.Patent No. 524,560, dated August 14, 1894. Application tiled May 4, 1894. Serial No. 510,072. (No model.)
To al? whom it may concern.-
-le 1t known that I, WILLIAM R. PARIsEN, a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sam ple-Cases and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sample cases.
The object of my invention is to produce a sample case specially adapted for carrying and exhibiting samples of various kinds of goods, particularly such as flour, sugars, teas, crackers and various notions.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, in its opened position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, in its closed position, with one end removed.
Referring to the drawings, A is a case, having a bottom board a to which are affixed a pair of end pieces af, whose width is less than that of the bottom board. To the said bottom board are hinged a pair of side pieces a2, a3, by means of hinges a4, the latter side `pieces a3 carrying a top piece or lid a5 hinged to it by hinges a6. The lid a5 is retained approximately at right angles to the side piece as when in its opened position by means of flexible stays am secured to said lid and to the side piece a3. The obj ect of this construction is to aord avery slight movement of the side piece a5 on its hinge a6, in order that the device may operate easily in openin g and closing.
Near the lower end of the end piece a in` side the case are .secured the guide pieces B, each preferably consisting of stamped sheet metal. having two slots, b and b', the first of which is horizontal while the latter extends from the rear end of the horizontal slot b upward and backward in the shape of a segment. Each guide piece is held a small distance away from its respective end piece, by
having its ends flanged outward as at 122,123 these flanged ends being secured to the end pieces a by screws, nails'or rivets, as shown at b4. In the slots b, b', of each guide` piece, moves a stud C having a head at each end, and passing through onefof the lower ends d `of a pair of lazytongs D, each lazytong having its other lower end d pivoted to the bottom board a by means of a staple d2.
At the corresponding nodal points cl3 of the lazytongs are trunnioned the sam ple trays E, which are preferably hung at the center of their ends, and are connected to move parallel to each other by means of a series of ilexible connecting devices, in thiscase cords e, two at the front of the trays and one at the rear. When the trays are closed down upon each other, the lower ends d of the lazytongs arefat the extreme limit of their forward movement, the studs C, being then in the horizontal slots b; as the trays are raised upward, preferably by drawing up on the top tray, the lazytongs are elongated, thereby contractingwidthwise and causing the studs C to move along the horizontal slots until they arrive at the rear end of the same whereupon they enter the segmental slots b thus permitting the pair of lazytongs with the trays to'be swung downward until stopped by the upper edge of the approximately vertical lid a5. In so swinging the lazytongs rearward, the top tray should be held horizontal to avoid spilling its contents, the other trays being retained in a horizontal position through the medium of the cords c.
When the lazytongs are in their closed position the trays rest one on top of the other, and consequently any articles such as teas, coffees, die., contained therein, are prevented from spilling out, the top tray being covered by a lid a5 of the case, when the said lid and side piece a3 are swung to their closed position.
'lhe side piece a2 is provided with a staple a7 into which enters the end of a hook as secured to the front edge of the lid, whereby the case is locked in its closed position, the lid being provided with a handle a9 by means of which the entire sample case may be conveniently carried. i
Having thus fully described my invention,
-ingrand a seriesof trays trunn'ioned in the lazytongs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. p
2. In a sample case, the combination, with a casing, of a pair of guide pieces provided with slots, a stud movable in the slot of each I guide piece, a pair of lazytongs each having one of its lower ends secured to its respect- 1ve stud, and a series of trays trunnion'ed in the lazytongs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a sample case, the combination, with a casing having hinged side pieces and a lid attached to one of the side pie-ces, of a pair of lazytongs movably attached to the interior of the casing, and arranged to rest on the edge of the lid when the easing is opened, and a series ot' trays hung in the lazytongs, substantially as and for the' purpose set forth.
4. Ina sample oase, the combination, with i Y a casing having hinged side pieces and a lid hinged to one of the side pieces, of a iexible stay arranged to hold thelid substantially at right angles to the side pieces when opened, a pair of` guide pieces provided with horizontal slots and curved slots, said guide pieces being attached to the interior of the casing, a stud movable in the slots in its respective guide piece,'a'pair of lazytongs, each having one of its lower ends attached to one of the studs and the other lower end attached to the interior of the casing, a series of trays trunnioned at the nodal points of the lazytongs and means for holding said trays parallel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses. Y
