WILLIAM BRIGHT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PAPER FlLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,951, elated February 10, 1885.
Application filed April 26, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM BRIGHT, of St. Louis, Missouri, have made a newand use ful Improvement in PapenFiles, of which the following is a full, clear. and exact descrip tion, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a viewin perspective of the improved paper-file opened, and Fig. 2 a view in perspective of it closed.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
The present invention is an improvement in that class of paperfiles which are boxshaped and adapted to be opened at the top.
The improvement consists in making the receptacle, when its cover is turned back or removed, to open laterally both ways from its bottom, upon which it is adapted to rest.
A represents the improved paper-file. It consists, substantially, oflhc central portion, B, the two wings O O, and the cover D. The central portion is composed of the base I) and the uprights b I), which stand upward from the base at the ends, respectively, thereof. The wings are each composed of the side piece, a, and the end pieces, 0 c. Both of the wings O O are hinged to the center B, and respectively at each side of the bottom there of, the hinges being shown at c c, respectively. The cover is hinged at (l to one, (I, of the wings.
To close the file, the two wings are turned upon their respective hinges toward the center B, and when the cover D is used it is turned upon its hinges downward and made to close the file at the top, as shown in Fig. 2. To open the file, the cover, if used, is turned back, and then either one or both of the wings G O can be turned upon their hinges away from the center B, as shown in Fig. -1. The advantage of this is that it on (No model) ables the papers E within the file to be turned either way from the center. wing was made movable, the papers could be turned but one way from a perpendicular position within the file-that is, toward the open wing; but in the present case, by opening either or both wings, the papers can be turned accordingly in either or both directions from the center of the file. By making both of the wings to open, the contents of the file can be more readily reached.
The most desirable method of carrying out the invention is that shown. The end pieces, 0, of the wings G O at each'end of the file are made to work in a narrow space, b, formed within the upright b. The end pieces, 0 c, are preferably made impcrforate. hen the file is closed, the end pieces lap each other within the spaces I) 11 and when the file is opened the upper corners, c c, of the end pieces, 0 0, respectively, encounter the upper ends of the spaces 1) 1)", respectively, and the wings, in consequence, are prevented from opening too far. Any other suitable means, however, may be used to arrest the outward movement ofthe wings.
I claim- The herein-described paper-file, the same consisting of the rigid central portion, B, and the wings G C, composed of parts 0 and c, said central portion being composed of the base I) and the double-walled uprights b b at the end of the base, which constitutes the support of the structure, and said wings being hinged to and both being adapted to open from and close toward the central portion, to enable the papers in the file to be tilted from the center of the file in either direction, substantially as shown and described.
\VILLIAM BRIGHT.
