UNITED STATES I-IYMAN BERNSTEIN, OF SALT LAKEGITY, UTAH.
DEVICE FOR BACKING POOL-BALLS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd J 11 13 1916 Application filed January 5, 1916. Serial No.- 70,483.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, IIYMAN Bnnnsrnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake, State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Racking Pool-Balls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for racking pool balls.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character embodying a frame of triangular shape having a horizontal partition provided with discharge openings for the pool balls and a racking plate slidable on the partition and also provided with discharge openings for the pool balls normally disposed out of registration with the openings in the partition, together with means for moving the racking plate to bring the openings therein into registration with the openings in the pool balls may pass through the registering openings and be properly positioned by the lower portion of the walls of the frame when the latter is lifted from the table.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter'more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with the handle broken away and the parts in their normal position; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the racking plate operated to a position to dispose the openings therein in registration with the openings in the horizontal partition; Fig. 3, a side view of the device; Fig. 4:, a fragmental perspective view with. the spring protecting cover removed; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5.5 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6, a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the device is shown as comprising a triangular frame A which includes side members 10, 11 and 12. Secured to the inner faces of these side mempartition whereby the,
bers respectively are upper ledges 13 and lower ledges l l which latter support a horizontal partition 15 provided with a plurality of pool ball discharge openings .16 conforming in arrangement to a pool ball frame. Slidably mounted on the upper side of the partition 15 is a racking plate 17. This plate is provided with a plurality of elon gated parallel slots 18in which are engaged respectively studs 19 which serve to limit sliding movement of the racking plate 17 as Well as guide said plate during its movement. The side member 12 is'provided with a horizontally disposed slot 20 through which the plate 17 moves. Secured to the side member 12 are leaf springs 21 the free ends of which are engaged in openings 22 in the plate 17, said springs serving to normally hold the plate in the position shown in Fig. 1, or in other words in position to dispose the openings 23 in said plate 17 out of registration with the openings 16 in the partition 15. The frame A is provided with a handle 2% upon which is pivoted a lever 25. This lever 25 is provided with an elongated slot 26 for a purpose that Willpresently appear. Mounted on the frame A at the junction of the side members 10 and 11 is a bracket 27 in which is pivoted for movement in a vertical plane a lever 28. The lower end of this lever has connected thereto one end of a link 29, the other end of said link being connected to the adjacent end of the plate 17. The upper end of the lever 28 has pivotally connected thereto, one end of a link 30 and the other end of this link is engaged through the slot 26 and provided with a cross arm 31 whereby said link is interlocked with the lever 25. i
In operation it will be obvious that when the pool balls are placed Within the frame above the plate 17 and partition 15 they cannot move downwardly owing to the fact that the openings 23 and 16 are out of regis tration. By moving the lever 25 toward the handle 24: the openings 23 will be brought into registration with the openings 16 and the pool balls will move through said openings to a position beneath the partition 15. During their descent the pool balls will travel in guide grooves 32 formed in the inner faces of the side members of'the frame A. These grooves are so arranged that the balls will be eventually brought into close contact. The frame A is then lifted and the racking of the pool balls is complete.
IVhat is claimed is 1. In a device for racking pool balls, the combination of a frame, a horizontal partition in said frame provided with openings therein through which the pool balls are adapted to pass, a racking plate slidable on the partition and provided With openings corresponding to the openings in the partition, means for normally holding the racking plate in position to dispose the openings therein out of registration with the openings in the partition, and means for moving the racking plate to dispose the openings therein in registration with the openings in the partition.
2. In a device for racking pool balls, the combination of a frame, a horizontal partition in said frame provided with openings therein through which the pool balls are adapted to pass, a racking plate slidable on the partition and provided With openings correspondin to the opening in the partition, means or normally holding the racking plate in position to dispose the openings therein out of registration with the openings in the partition, a handle on the frame, a lever pivoted on the handle, and connections between said lever and the racking plate whereby the movement of the lever in one direction will shift the racking plate to a position to dispose the openings therein in registration with the openings in the partition.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
HYMAN BERNSTEIN.
