LINING FOR BUTTER BOXES.

V, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. WHITE, OF STOWE, VERMONT.
LINING FOR BUTTER-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,231, dated August 7, 1894.
Application filed April 19, 1894- To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, GEORGE W. WHITE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stowe, in the county of Lamoille and State of Vermont, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for Butter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a lining for wooden butter boxes which is made up of a single piece of parchment paper which is adapted to entirely envelop the butter and prevent the same being impregnated with the taste or smell of the material of which the packing box is made; and it con sists in providing a packing box with a lining consisting of a singlepiece of parchment paper which is of such configuration that it will provide a complete envelope or integument for the article placed in the box, a double thickness of paper being provided where there are joints.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a box showing my im-- proved lining applied thereto, one corner of. the box being broken away to better illustrate the overlapping parts of the lining, and Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the shape or configuration of the lining.
A designates a wooden butter-box of any This lining ismade up of asingle piece of parchment paper, and for a box which tapers inwardly from top to bottom the piece of parchment paper will havea central portion b of substantially the same size as the bottom of the box. From this central portion I) extend the end and side pieces which flare as shown. The
end pieces I) have extensions b which are of substantially the same width as the width of the upper part of the box, but the side pieces 12 flare continuously from the central portion 1) outwardly the side pieces are also flared Serial No. 508,231 (No model.)
from the central same as shown.
When the lining is placed in the box the folds or bends of the paper come on the dotted lines in Fig. 2. y
In use the lining is placed in the box so that the flared portions on the ends and sides of the same will overlap the joints thus providing at the corners of the box a double thickness of the lining, the butter may be then placed in the box and the upper part of the same covered by the extensions of the end and. side portions of the lining. The overlapping portions of the lining thoroughly prevent the butter coming in contact with the wood at the corners of the box.
From the above it will be seen that I provide a very simple, cheap and effective lining, and one which may be easily handled, and does not adhere to the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- I r 1. A lining for wooden butter boxes formed of a single piece of parchment paper which is adapted to entirely cover the bottom and sides of the box and extend above the latter to provide a lining immediately beneath the lid of the box, the lining having flared side and end portions which provide a double thickness at or adjacent to the corners of the box or receptacle, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a wooden butterbox a lining therefor made of a single piece of parchment paper which consists of a central portion which entirely covers the bottom of the box and flared side and end portions which extend from the central portion to cover the inner sides, ends and top of the box, the flared side and end portions of the lining pro viding a double thickness at or adjacent to the corners and at the top of the box where the parts of the lining overlap, substantially as shown.
3. In combination with a Wooden butterbox consisting of side and end pieces connected. to-each other, a bottom attached to said side and end pieces, and a removable top, of a flexible and impervious lining made up portion Z) to the edge of the t L: p I 524,231
of a single piece which is provided with side In testimonylwhereof Iaffix my signature in and end portions which are flared as shown, presence of two witnesses. the lining being adapted to entirely cover the contents of the box and provide a double GEORGE WHITE 5 thickness of material at the corner joints of Witnesses:
the box, substantially as shown and for the L. L. HARRIS,
purpose set forth. I CHANDLER WATTS.
