Vhen the top flaps J L are bent downward to horizontal position, as in Fig. 3, their inturned side extensions 0 will contact with and bear against the side walls B D of the pail and serve to brace and support said top flaps from depression beyond normal closed position by any weight or force applied to the top of the pail. The parts 0 not only serve to supportthe closed cover of the pail, but by fitting snugly against the sides C E of the pail they render the pail more nearly slopproof at the four corners of its top. I am not the first to employ these side extensions 0 upon the cover-flaps of a pail of this general character for the purpose of bracing and supporting the cover of the pail when closed and rendering it more nearly slop-proof at the four corners of its top; but these extensions O are peculiarly useful in my improved pail in combination with the cover-flaps K and M and the metal fastening devices with which the latter are provided, as will be now explained. The extensions 0 upon the coverflaps J L are preferably of such shape that their edges 1), Fig. 2, will, as the flaps J L are bent downward toward horizontal position, contact with the side walls B D of the pail slightly before the flaps J L reach true horizontal position and offer a yielding resistance to farther downward movement of said flaps and tend to spring them upward from horizontal position when pressure upon them is relieved, Fig. 3. Now the cover-flaps K M are provided with cooperating sheetmetal fastening devices P Q of well-known form, by means of which when said flaps are bent downward to horizontal position 011 top of the flaps J L they may be strained toward each other or drawn perfectly taut by means of the metal fasteners P Q and secured in such position by the reverse bending of the tongue of the fastener P in the usual manner, as seen in Fig. 4. By pressing the four flaps down firmly to or towardhorizont'al position at the time the fasteners P Q are engaged and then drawing the flaps K M strongly toward each other by means of the fastener P and bending the latter down upon itself the result will be that the parts 0, which have been strongly pressed at their outer edges against the side walls B D, will tend to spring the cover-flaps J L upward slightly, which tendency will be resisted by the taut connection between the flaps K M holding the latter firmly in the position to which they were depressed at the time the fastening de- The two cover-ilaps J L will thus be pressed upward tightly against the two cover-flaps K M, with the result that a very snug and tight joint will be produced and maintained between the several members of the cover of the pail and the lat-tor be thus very tightly and securely closed.

The double thickness of the cover-flaps K K and M H affords a firm base for the secure attachment of the metal fasteners P Q, enabling such flaps to be drawn strongly toward each other by means of such fasteners, as above explained, without danger of tearing the fasteners loose from the flaps. It will be understood, however, that such double thickness of these cover-flaps is. not absolutely essential to the feature of my invention last above described ,since without departing from it the extensions K M might be omitted, or it retained for the purpose of affording a firm attachment for the metal fasteners they need not be of sufficient size to overlap the sides 0 E of the pail and serve the further purpose of covering the ends of the bail.

As will be apparent from Fig. 1, the blank of my improved pail is cut from the same square or rectangular blank heretofore required for the simplest and cheapest styles of pails of this general character, so that the advantages of my improved pail are attained without any increase in the cost of the pail, while as compared with pails of a somewhat different character heretofore made and intended to embody some of the advantages attained in my improved pail the latter is very much cheaper than such old pails, as well as very much more simple in construction.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim- 1. A paper pail of the character described, having its two cover-flaps K M provided with the extensions K M folded inward upon the flaps K M and overlapping the side walls 0 E of the pail and covering theinner ends of the wire bail N, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein-described paper pail having its cover-flaps J L provided with the extensions 0 adapted when said flaps are bent downward to horizontal position to fit against the side walls 0 E of the pail to aid in tightly closing the pail and to contact at their edges with the side walls B D thereof to brace and support the cover of the pail, and having its other two cover-flaps K M provided with the cooperating fastening devices P Q, for drawing them tightly together and holding the cover of the pail closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The herein-described paper pail having its cover-flaps J L provided with the extensions 0 adapted when said flaps are bent downward to horizontal position to fit against the side walls 0 E of the pail to aid in tightly closing the pa'il and to contact at their edges with the side walls B D thereof to brace and support the cover of the pail, and having its other two cover-flaps K M provided with extensions K M folded inward upon the flaps K M, said cover-ilaps K K and M M being provided with cooperating fastening devices P Q'for drawing them tightly together and holding the cover of the pail closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The herein-described paper pail having its cover-flaps J L provided with the extensions 0 adapted when said flaps are bent downward to horizontal position to fit against the side walls 0 E of the pail and \to contact at their edges with the side walls B D thereof to brace and support the cover of the pail, and having its other two cover-flaps K M provided with the extensions K M folded inward upon the flaps K M and overlapping theside walls 0 E ofthe pail and covering the inner ends of the wire bail N, said cover-flaps K K andM M being provided with cooperating fastening devices P Q for holding the cover of the pail closed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The herein-described blank for a paper vessel, composed of the bottom A, four sides B O D E, corner-folds F G H I, and four coverflaps J K L M, the flaps K M being provided with the extensions K M adapted to be folded ing provided with the extensions K M adapted to be folded inward upon the flaps K M and overlap the sides C E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
