CARTRIDGE-PACKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,604, dated July 10, 1894.

Be it known that I, JAMES P. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Feed Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cartridge-feed cases adapted for use with that class of magazine guns in which the cartridges are supplied to the magazine thereof from the top or bottom, and more especially to that class of magazine guns in which the magazine thereof depends from the receiver and in which the cartridges are introduced into said magazine through the said receiver.
The invention has for its object to provide a cartridge-feed case adapted for containing a number of cartridges sufiicient to fill a magazine, and to so construct the case that it may be held and operated by one hand and the cartridges rapidly discharged therefrom. Also to so construct the cartridge-feed case that it will be light and serviceable and of low cost to manufacture.
To this end the invention consists in the combinations and special features hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cartridge-feed case embodying my invention, the case being shown as filled with cartridges. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssectional view of the case, taken in dotted line a-a, Fig. 1, the cut-off or sliding gate being shown as closed. Fig. 3 is a view, similar to Fig. 2, showing the cut-off gate as open and the cartridges as being expelled from the case. Fig. L is a horizontal cross-section of the case taken in dotted line b-b, Fig. 1 as seen from the bottom in said figure. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the cartridge-feed case devoid of cartridges.

Inasmuch as my improved cartridge-feed case may be used in connection with several forms of magazine guns, and since the application of cartridge-feeders to magazine guns is well understood by those conversant with the art to which this invention appertains, it is deemed unnecessary to show, in'the accompany'in g drawings, a magazine-gun in connection with the feed-case to illustrate the use of the case in connection therewith.
Briefly stated, the cartridge-feed case consists of a box-like casing, designated in a general way by B, open at one end at one side to form an inlet and outlet opening for the cartridges; and a sliding gate, 0, adapted to partially close said outlet opening.
The casing B which constitutes the box-like portion of the feed-case, will, in practice, be constructed from a single sheet-metal blank bent or folded to the form illustrated most clearly in Fig. 5 of the drawings; it comprising the top-wall, 2, the side-wall, 3, havingits lower end bent inward to form the deflecting flange or bottom-wall, 3, and the two endwalls, 4 and 5, having the inwardly projecting flanges, 4' and 5, respectively, as will be hereinafter fully described.
As will be seen by reference to the drawings, the casing B is open at one side, as at 6, and the bottom wall 3 will preferably extend but partially across the casing diametrically. The two end-Walls 4t and 5 are bent inwardly at right angles at their side-edges adjacent to the side openings 6 to form short oppositely disposed guide-flanges at, 5, respectively, adapted for supporting and guiding the sliding cut-off gate 0. This cut-off gate 0 is constructed from a flat piece of sheet-metal and is of a length slightly greater than the distance between the adjacent edges of the guideflangcs 4:, 5', it extending at its ends below said guide-flanges, as shown, and is of awidth or height considerably less than the width of the side opening 6. Said gate 0 is shown slitted at 7 and 7 at its ends near its center and is struck up to form elastic-lips 8, 8', which when the gate is in operative position upon the casing B, over-lap the guide-flanges 4: and 5 and hold the gate against lateral movement. By constructing the lips as to be resilient, the extreme ends of the gate are drawn closely into contact with the guideflanges which normally hold the gate against sliding movement. These guide-flanges terminate at their lower ends remote from the lower end of the case to leave the dischargeopening or mouth, 9, at the lower end unobstructed when the gate is slid to allow the exit of the cartridges in the case.
Formed upon the upper edge of the gate 0 is an outward projection which acts as a stop which abuts against the edge of the top-wall and limits the opening movement of said gate.
It is obvious that the bottom-wall might extend entirely across the lower end of the case and the cartridges be discharged through the side-opening 6 at its lower end, but the construction illustrated is preferable as the deflecting flange 3 performs the function of the guide wall of a spout directing the movement of the cartridges.
By means of this construction of the feedcase, the case may be held between the fore finger and thumb when filling a magazine, and the sliding gate be opened and closed by the thumb of one hand as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, or with the fore finger according to the position of the case, and whether the right or left hand is employed.
Having thus described my invention, I 1 claim-- 1. The herein described cartridge feed-case,
consisting of a box-like casing having a discharge-opening, and a sliding gate adapted for closing said discharge-opening, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein described cartridge-feed case, consisting of the box-like casing B having the discharge-opening 9 at one end thereof and having the guide-flanges, 4:, 5', substantially as described, and the sliding gate 0 supported upon said guide-flanges and adapted for clos ing said discharge-opening, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination in a cartridge-feed-case, of the box-like casing B open at its lower end and consisting of the top-wall 2, side-wall 3 inwardly flanged at its lower end, and the endwalls 4 and 5 having the inwardly-projecting sliding-gate-supporting flanges at, and 5'; and the sliding gate having the elastic lips S, 8' over-lyin the guide-flanges and constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
