Description

N X a l. x. n. MILOYANOVITGH-KOKA.
CARTRIDGE FEED CASE FOR MAGAZINE GUNS- Patented Mar. 3, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CARTRIDGE-FEED CASE FOR MAGAZINE-GUNS.
srscmcanon forming part or Letters Patent No. 47,577, dated March a, 1891. muse m September 21, mo. Serial It. seems. a. sum.)- Patented in ne t April 2a, 1890, 110- 90,331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Kos'rs R. MILOVANO- Vi'lCH-KOKA, a subject of the King of Servia, residing atVienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Holders, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Belgium,
-dated April 26, 1890, N05 90,331;) and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cartridge holders or cases adapted to contain a number of cartridges for use with that class of magazinegnns in which the cartridges are-supplied to the magazine from the top or from the bottom or from one or the other side, and more especially to that class of magazine-guns in which the magazine depends from the re eeiver, and in which the cartridges are introduced into said magazine through said receiver.
The invention has for its object to provide a cartridge-holder ada ted to contain-a numher of cartridges suilic cut to fill a magazine, to so construct the case that the contents thereof may be rapidly and readily expelled either at top or bottom, and so that one cartridgc after another may be removed singly from the holder without danger of the remaining cartridges falling out, and in so constructing the holder. as tcbe light yet sum ficintly strong to protect the cart ridges against n nry.
To these ends the invention consists in structural features, as will now be fully described, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a breech-ioading magazine-gun with a portion of the receiver broken away to show the upper end of the magazine, and showing the cartridge-holder applied thereto in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. ii a side elevation,
' of a cartridge-holder constructcdaccording to my invention.
The gun shown in Fig. 1- maybe of anydcsired or known construction, the magazine C depending from the receiver, which has a longitudinal slot in its bottom for the passage of the cartridges to or from the magazine.
0' are the elastic stop-arms for retaining the uppermost cartridge from passing into the receiver under the stress of the feed-spring c.- The stop-arms are (orked'nnd extend along the mouth of the magazine from the rear end of the same, so that the uppermost cartridge will lie at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the receiver with the. flange projecting into the path of the breech-bolt, as shown, and as described in my said application.
The cartridge-holder D, Figs. 2 and 3, consists, essentiall v,of a sheet-metal casing having in horizontal cross-section the general form of a cartridge, which casing is open at top and bottom. In the edges of the case, at top and bottom and near the ends thereof, are formed elastic lips (I, diametrically opposite each other, which lips (I are bent inwardly and serve to retain the cartridges in the holder. As shown, the sides of the case at the shell end are cut out to form openings (1 of such dimensions as will readily admit of the use of the lingers for pushing' the'cartridges out when the holder is applied to the magazine, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Thessopenlngs d extend from one edge nearly to the opposite edge of the casing, but in reverse directions-that is to say, one of the openings in one side of the casing extends from the upper edge nearly to the lower' edge, and the like opening in the opposite side of the casing extends from the lower edge ncarlytothe upperedge thereof. Since boththe top and bottom of the casing are open it becomes reversible, so that either top or bottom can be presented to the magazine in replenishing the same, thereby avoiding the necessity of taking cognizance of a top and bottom, and facilitating the use of the holder accordingly. Inasmuch as the openings d are comparatively large, having but a narrow strip of metal between them and the edge of the casing I preferably give to the on of the openings a curvilinear form and corrugate the narrowstrlp otnnctal along the same, or form a curved butward bulgc or rib by stamping, as shown at d. Along the unslotted edge of each side of the ease I form an outwardly-bent. flange 11', extending from one elastic lip d to the other, that serves as a hearing for the holder. one or the other of said flanges resting upon the left edge of the month of the magazine when the holder is insci-ted 'into the receiver.
When the holder is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the cartridges therein can he readilypushed out of it, as all of them are. exposed to the action of the fingers through the medium of the reversed slots (1 in the sides of the casinmaud the contents of the holder may be readily and rapidly expolled, the elastic lips (I yielding to pressure. liaving described my invention, what. I
7 claim isl. A cartridge holder or case consisting ol a casing that is open at top and bottom and has finger-slots (1 formed in the sides thereof at the shell end, said linger-slots (1' extending in reverse directions from one edge nearly to the opposite edge, in combination with retaining devices to prevent the cartridges from falling out, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A cartridge holder or case consisting of a sheet-metalcasing that is open at top and bottom and that has inwardly-bent retaininglips (1 formed on the side edges, and that has finger-slots (1 formed in the sides at the shell end of the casing, which linger-slots extend in opposite directions from one edge nearly to the other, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I mix-my signature in presence oi two witnesses.
