J. A. SPAIN.
HAME ATTACHMENT.
Patented July 3, 1894.
N'ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. SPAIN, OF TALBOTTON, GEORGIA.
HAME ATTACH MENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 522,436, dated July 3, 1894 Application filed March 30, 1 8 94.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I,,JAMEs A. SPAIN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Talbotton, in the county of Talbot and State of Georgia,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hame attachments, and it relates more particularly to the means employed in attaching the trace to the hames in work harnesses.
The invention has for its object to improve upon the construction described and shown in Patent No. 487,157, of November 29, 1892. In the patent referred to a metallic plate provided with a series of hooked arms is shown, the said hooked arms being designed to engage the chain or loop at the end of the trace.
In the present invention I dispense entirely with the pivoted plate carrying the hooked arms, and provide the metallic plate which is attached to the face of the hame with a laterally extending arm which extends beyond the side edge of the hame, said lateral arm being provided at its free end with a hook to engage the link or other attaching device which is provided at the end of the trace.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon forms a part of this specification, and in which drawing I have shown a perspective View of my device as it appears when attached to the hame.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter A designates a hame, to the outer face of which is secured by means of staples B and O, the metallic plate D. Extending downwardly and rearwardly from the body portion of saidv plate D, is an arm D and passed through holes in the plate near the extreme end of the arm D are the arms of the staple B, which staple serves to hold SerialNo. 505,762. (No model.)
the ring E. The plate D is also provided with a laterally extending arm D which projects for a short distance beyond the outer edge of the hame, and is provided at its free end with a hook F, with which'the trace end engages.
The staple O has one of its arms. passed through an opening provided at the angle formed by the junction of the arms D and "D while the opposite arm of the said staple engages the outer edge of the plate nearly in the line of draft when the trace is attached.
It will be seen that by this construction a strong and durable trace attachment is provided, the position of staple 0 being such as to receive directly the strain, and thus pre vent the possibility of the plate being broken or detached from the face of the hame, when in use.
The device is simple and inexpensive, of few parts and will not be liable to be broken, while itrserves as a convenient and secure means for attaching the trace to the hame in plow and other work harnesses.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be/new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg The herein described device for attaching the trace to the hame of a plow or work harness, the same consisting of a metallic plate having a body portion and two arms as described, one of the arms extending substantially in the direction of the length of the hame and being secured thereto by a staple which serves also as securing means for the line-ring, while the opposite arm extends lat erally beyond the outer edge of the hame and provided at its free end with a hook, and a staple having one of its arms passed through the body portion of the plate and having its other arm engaging the edge of the plate in substantially the line of draft, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. SPAIN.
