ATTACHMENT FOR HOLDING EAR-JEWELS.

Be it known that we, GEORGE H. TILFORD and ARTHUR F. BENNETT, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Holding Ear-Jewels; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to the jewels or ornaments worn on the ear, and more especially to means for holding them in place while in use. This is usually accomplished by making a hole in the lobe of the ear, andsuspending them by a ring or like device.

The object of this invention, is to construct an attaching device by which the ornament may be securely held on the ear without passing through any part of it, and save the necessity for piercing the ear. It is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure -1, is a side elevation of the ornament and attaching device. Fig. 2, is a section taken on line w, m, Fig. 1, showing the recess in the back of the setting.

The holder consists of a loop of metal a, made fast at one end to the setting of the ornament b, to be held. This loop a, is made of sufficient capacity to easily receive the lobe of the ear, and its back end is made thicker and has ahole through it with ascrew thread made in it. A short rod 0, has a like screw thread cut on it, and is fitted to screw into the hole in the loop horizontally,directly in line with the center of the ornament b. cess r, is made in the rear of the setting of the ornament b, directly in line with the axis of the rod 0, so that when that rod is screwed clear in, the disk 12, and pad 8, will enter into it.

To attach the holder and ornament to the ear, the rod 0, is first screwed clear back to the disk 1;, by its head c, then it is put onto the ear so that the lobe will hang down in the loop between the setting and the disk v. The rod 0, is then screwed in again, compressing the ear lobe between the disk and setting until it feels sufiiciently firm to hold itself on. The disk Q), will compress a portion of the ear into the recess 1' in the back of the setting, so as to greatly increase the hold on the ear, and the pad of felt s, will prevent any scratching or cutting of the parts. Attempts have been made to accomplish this object by means of spring clamps; but as the thickness of the lobes of difierent ears vary a great deal, it is almost impossible to secure the proper pressure in all cases, necessary to give the hold on the ear required, especially where jewels of much value are concerned.

Having thus described the construction and operation of our improvements, we claim as our invention In an attachment for holding ear jewels or ornaments, the combination of a loop having a jewel or ornament attached thereto, a screw rod fitted to screw into a hole in one end of the loop, a disk on the inner end of said screw rod, a pad of soft material secured to the face of said disk, with a recess in theend of the loop opposite to said disk, substantially as set forth.
